I have used antivirus software on my Mac for several months now. I download many free applications, and have had neither viruses caught or any problems with viruses. I recently disabled the virus software, and I have no problems whatsoever.

Meryl, on my laptop, the control key is the lower left, between the "fn" (function) key and the "alt/option" key.

(What used to be the Apple key is the one labeled "command" that also has that cloverleaf icon on it. Command pretty much takes the place of a Windows Control-- Command-C to copy, Command-V to paste, etc.)

Yes, there are viruses for the Mac. I think I counted maybe 7-8 trojans and worms for Mac OSX at last check -- which you pretty much have to go out of your way to get (i.e. downloading pirated software or visiting 'dark alley' sites) and have to install on purpose by supplying your administrative password. I have antivirus on my computer--didn't used to--but that's only to catch the Windows viruses (so my Mac is not a conduit). Every virus ever detected on my machine has been a Windows virus... or a macrovirus from 1997, ha ha. =)

If you have any articles or information referring to this 100% Mac botnet, please post them. I work for a security tech company and I have never heard of any such thing. Also, Apple Security updates tend to patch security vulnerabilities (not Necessarily EXPLOITED vulnerabilities), not to prevent viruses, worms and trojans.

I have had a Mac for over 10 years and have never had a virus. Most of that time was without antivirus or a firewall. Yes, the peace of mind is in fact worth the price to me.

FWIW, I did not see this article as flame bait at all. I did, however, see those first few comments as flame provocation, and very defensive.

Aeriose,

While I see your point (fuel doesn't work when you're trying to put out a fire), there is a small difference between what he was saying and what you were reading.

He was complaining about flame wars that seem nearly inevitable when people feel that their choices have been questioned or debated - especially when the people involved are cut off from one another and can't read body language and other signs that the speaker is emoting.

He wasn't ranting about the people's opinions on OS choice, he was ranting about their reaction. Think of it as kind of a race argument - it would be very racist to argue against a specific color of skin, but it is perfectly reasonable to be upset at someone who DOES spew hate messages over the color of one's skin.

This is probably seems to be an extreme approach to the outlook, but people seem to be just as defensive of their O/S as they are of their race/religion/etc!

Anyway, my point is that, while it may SEEM hypocritical to call people stupid or jerks while telling them not to do exactly the same thing, he was NOT doing the same thing - he was arguing the o/s equivalent of saying that it's stupid to hate someone for their race (again, that's the way people react - I do NOT see it as the same issue or the same level of importance! O/S is a simple matter of choice, and it is fairly pointless to scream at the top of your lungs that yours is better that someone else's!).

The other point I wanted to address in your note was that of the "flaws" in the article.

The OP was simply trying to help people make a decision - if every magazine that published articles with factual errors were shut down for it, most magazines wouldn't last past a few issues. Plus, in at least one case, the OP recognized an error and attempted to correct it. Nobody's perfect, we can all just try. I certainly prefer to read articles that are absolutely precise, but on reading the RESPONSES to the articles, there have been a lot of inaccuracies as well.

I repeat, relax people - learn what you can when someone TRIES to provide helpful information. Don't attack someone for trying to help just because you don't feel you need help!

If you want to complain about flame wars I would suggest avoiding phrases such as

"If someone thinks my post here has a mac following or bias, then screw you! and go and bury yourself in a tub of lard, coz that’s where your brain belongs."
or
"GET A LIFE IDIOTS!"
or
"you are the biggest narrowmind ever to walk on this planet."

Those sorts of things tend to make one calling for calm discussion look like a hypocrite.

And no, that article had plenty of excedingly innacurate statements in it. If it was about switching from Windows to Mac then it should have been about what Macs can do, not slipping in things like Rast, I and others have pointed out are simply false.
