geek giftsThe original meaning of Christmas isn’t separating people from their money, but that’s the effect it has today. Don’t panic – there are geeky gifts out there that won’t separate you from all of your cash. Technology is supposed to make our lives better, but it also tends to cost a lot. With some creativity, though, you can find affordable gifts the geeks in your life will appreciate. This is particularly nice in a rough economy, when money is tight for many.

I’ve come up with a few geek gift ideas below, but be sure to check out the comments for even more suggestions.

Flash Drives…

Even in the age of Dropbox and the cloud, flash drives are immensely useful. They remain an easy way to move data from machine to machine, and are the perfect home for portable software. You can even fill them with live CDs for booting.

Everyone needs a good flash drive, and now they’re cheaper than ever. It’s not hard to find 16GB drives for under $20, and smaller drives cost even less.

Stuff those stockings with storage!

Oh, and don’t forget to add some of our free technology guides to that drive.

Apple’s Refurb Store

Looking for something a little higher end? You should really check out Apple’s refurbished store. You’ll find all of Apple’s products here, warrantied, just a little cheaper. If you’re buying a really nice gift for a loved one look here first.

Sure, you’ll almost certainly be spending a lot. But it’s a lot less than buying retail – sometimes $300 less – with a lot less risk than buying used – Apple’s one year warranty applies.

Flip HD Cameras

Do you know a would-be viral star who still uses their webcam? Change that with the Flip HD, the pocket-sized camera that records great footage. I found several of these online for $50, which is great value considering the quality of the device. I guess smartphones are pushing them out of the market…

This article just reminded me why I don't own any Apple products--their refurbished prices are still more expensive than brand new products from other brands!

That Flip camera is intriguing, though. For $50, I might have to invest in one.
