Against this dystopian backdrop you have to find and rescue Elizabeth, a young lady held captive in the city in the air for the past 12 years. Grid 2

best games 2013

Platforms: PC, PS3, and Xbox 360
Release Date: Summer 2013
Anticipation Level: 8/10

Grid 2 is the long-awaited sequel to Race Driver: Grid, which was released in 2008 to commercial and critical acclaim. The original was a tough racing game which saw the player become a racing driver, starting at the bottom and working their way up to owning and managing a team. There were a variety of different events to compete in, including drift championships and demolition derbies.

Little is yet known about the sequel. All Codemasters has revealed so far is a teaser trailer and two gameplay trailers, one of which is embedded below. We can clearly expect more of the same, but with the lengthy gap between games hopefully all the wrinkles of the first title will have been ironed out. The original had a compelling multiplayer mode, and Grid 2 should reprise that.

Tomb Raider

best games 2013

Platforms: PC, PS3, and Xbox 360
Release Date: March 2013
Anticipation Level: 9/10

Tomb Raider has been with us since 1996, when the first game landed on the original PlayStation. Its main protagonist Lara Croft immediately became an icon, being a female lead character in a male-dominated industry. Her disproportionately busty body may have helped, but still. The games have dwindled in popularity and quality since, but it’s nothing that a good reboot can’t fix.

The new Tomb Raider game set for release in 2013 is just that: a reboot which forgets everything that has gone before. The 2013 Tomb Raider is set before Lara Croft became the brave heroine we now know her as, exploring her origins as she has to fight to survive on a remote island full of bad guys. Watch Dogs

best games 2013

Platforms: PC, PS3, and Xbox 360
Release Date: Late 2013
Anticipation Level: 9/10

Watch Dogs is an exciting new IP from Ubisoft Montreal, the developer that brought the Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed franchises to life. Little wonder then that anticipation levels are so high. Embedded below is the teaser trailer that really just sets the scene, but there’s an extended gameplay trailer (YouTube link) that shows what the game is all about.

This game sees hacking and technical proficiency used as a weapon. You play Aiden Pearce, who is capable of tapping into any device tied to the city’s central operating system, and he uses this ability to stay one step ahead of his foes. This innovative gameplay mechanic — matched with stunning visuals — means Watch Dogs could be the exceptional title released in 2013.

Grand Theft Auto V

cross platform video games

Platforms: PS3 and Xbox 360
Release Date: Spring 2013
Anticipation Level: 10/10

Grand Theft Auto V is coming, finally, after far too big a gap between the first teaser trailer and the actual release date. We still don’t quite know when it’s going to drop, but it will definitely be during the first half of 2013. The second trailer (embedded below) gives much away, including the outline of a plot which employs three main protagonists who join forces. We also know the open-world Los Santos (read Los Angeles) environment is huge, the variety of vehicles has been expanded, and there will be side-quests galore to ensure epic longevity.

These games represent what I consider to be the best titles coming out on more than one format in 2013. There are many more that didn’t quite make the list, including (but not limited to) XCOM, Crysis 3, DmC, Thief IV, and Battlefield 4.

Are there any more games you would add to the list? Or are there any that made the cut but which you’re really not interested in? Of those mentioned which are you most excited about? And why? As always let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

next time how about you use the word "multi-platform" instead of saying "cross-platform" as its being used for ps3 exclusives that actually do cross-play with the same system.

Cross-platform and Multi-platform are interchangeable, describing the exact same process whereby software (video games or otherwise) is released on multiple platforms. Sony is the one confusing people, and should probably stick to referring to what they do as "cross-play."

That's guaranteed. Especially with the arguments regarding gun control currently happening in the U.S.

The other Watch Dogs trailer is better, gives you a feel for what the game is really about. This game looks very cool.

Don't mean to sound like an old duffer, but why do all the "best" games have to be about shooting each other or destroying stuff. Don't get wrong, I love GTA and the like, but four out of the five games YOU are looking forward to are "blasty-shooty-blow'em-up" games. Don't they boring and turn out all the same.
What about any strategy or sports games? Don't they get any look in?
God I sound like my Dad! -hahahaha (sorry)

      December 28, 2012 at 12:12 am

You do have a point, and I'm also a fan of inventive, genre-blurring games. But they tend to be surprise hits that don't enjoy the kind of anticipation levels of the titles featured here.

Also, I'm not sure you can generalize. Grand Theft Auto 5 is more about exploration than anything, Tomb Raider has a strong storyline, Watch Dogs is far from being a simple shooter, and Bioshock is known for its offbeat creativity.

Everyone have their own preference and this list is simply the mainstream examples. We all have our own 'best list' and it'd be exhaustive to try to please everyone. I do prefer strategy and JRPG, but hey, the 'blasty-shooty-blow'em-up' is nice for playing together or blowing off some steam :)
