Makeuseof did a post on us, http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/vocabsushi-build-your-vocabulary/. VocabSushi is free and does 2 things better than any other site: adaptive learning (kind of like free rice - get a question right, you get a harder word) and real world contextual examples taken from recent news articles (so you can see how the NYT uses the word 'abstemious' and understand the word more than just through a dictionary definition) enjoy!
