The European legal system is based on the roman/canon legal system. The British legal system refuses to admit that it is actually based on the roman/canon legal system and developed early the "common law system". The American legal system (which is one of the newest legal systems and hence not the basis for anything legally important) is based upon this system. Population wise are most systems civil law systems and most certainly is every common law system based upon some sort of written down law.
