Rainey,

You are talking about traffic shaping, and it's not as easy as it sounds. Though I have heard of the following:

http://www.net-peeker.com/

I haven't tried it, but it does state that it allows you to throttle bandwidth. It let's you prioritize by port, protocol, IP, etc.

The only issue is that you are probably looking for some application that it shows you who is connected, and by connection you can adjust their percentage of bandwidth, and you aren't gonna find an inexpensive product that can do that.

Traffic shaping can be a very resource intensive task, so I won't run it from your primary system.

You could always try Untangle, which is a unique linux distro. It's an all in one gateway appliance OS that you could install an a somewhat old system. It does more then just traffic shaping...

Great article. Was just wondering if ye knew of software that allows ye to control what happens on the network. Like shows who is on the network, and from there, ye can throttle their connection to only have 20% of the bandwidth, while another computer can have the rest? Or have it so that when two computers are accessing the network, they are given 50% exactly?

Thanks,
Rainey!!

If you do a search for long-range routers you'll likely find a few on the market that would work, although they're pricey. If it would me - I'd look into a wi-fi network extender, as I believe you get more bang (distance) for the price...especially if you already have an existing router anyway.

Hey Alex - are you referring to one app or all of them. They work on any system that's Wi-Fi enabled. Some are probably a lot more fun on a laptop though, like WiPeer.
