A single player game can actually be more than that, thanks to the power of modders. These games were created as single player experiences, but enterprising players decided to build multiplayer mods for them, and they really change the gameplay. Check them out, and you might never look at these games the same way again!

Just Cause 2

What Is This Game About?

Just Cause 2 is a strange, physics-bending game that features some of the most insane traversal that you could ever fathom. It also features a slew of interesting weapons that make for an incredibly exciting experience unlike anything else you've ever played. The third-person shooter looks like it's grounded in reality, but the look is about the only realistic thing in this game.

The Mod

This game is already insane, so why not go all out and add in a ton of other players? That's just what happened with this mod; it just creates a giant sandbox filled with dozens – and even hundreds in some case – of other players. There's no real structure, but for a game that's already as crazy as Just Cause 2, that's just fine.

How To Use It

You can get this mod from Steam, or from the creator's website. It's easy to install, as it installs like a standard piece of developer-created DLC on Steam. This makes it incredibly easy to get in and get playing.

Euro Truck Simulator 2

What Is This Game About?

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is one of those weird driving sims that have grown especially popular thanks to YouTube and Twitch. It sees the player making deliveries across Europe in an 18-wheeler, and all of the realistic problems you'd expect to find along the way are a part of the experience. For driving fans, or people who love relaxing games (with the occasional hint of weird glitches and other nonsense), it's a perfect game, but for some, a little extra is need to keep them interested.

The Mod

Driving around by yourself just isn't cutting it? That's okay, because there's a mod – aptly named Euro Truck Simulator 2 Multiplayer – that will fix that problem by throwing other players into your trucking universe. Never before has negotiating challenging turns in a giant truck been so exciting, because another trucker might be coming around that very same corner. It's still in alpha, so expect plenty of problems, but let's be honest, bugs are part of the charm that makes this game so popular, so having them in multiplayer keeps things comfortable.

How To Use It

You can get this mod right from the developer's website, but you need to log in with Steam to download it. In fact, that seems to be the only way the developers are offering this mod, so make sure you own the game through Steam as well, or else the mod won't do you a bit of good. Once downloaded, it's a very standard installation process, and then you launch the mod, which opens the game with the multiplayer mod enabled.

Skyrim

What Is This Game About?

Skyrim is one of those epic role-playing games that can be enjoyed for hundreds of hours. It's a massive world with a fantastic story that you'll never want to leave. If you're a fan of RPGs, you've no doubt spent your fair share of time in the world of Skyrim, but what if you've exhausted pretty much all of the content? What if you want more? What if Elder Scrolls Online (the newer MMO set in the Elder Scrolls universe) didn't scratch the online itch for you? We've got the answer you seek.

The Mod

The online mod for Skyrim is, at least for the time being, not being updated by the creators anymore, so it might never actually get finished. However, you can still download and play what they have so far, and what they have created is pretty cool. It's not a true MMO experience, with other players appearing as the prisoner NPCs from around the world. The monsters you see and those they see aren't the same, but you can use a world chat and see them running around. It's not a perfect mod at all, but it's definitely worth installing to see if it can breathe some new life into Skyrim for you.

How To Use It

The developers have posted a detailed guide to installing the Skyrim mod [Broken URL Removed] over on their forum, and it's quite a bit more complicated than the other mods on the list. You'll have to dig a little deeper, but if you're comfortable messing with files on your computer, you should be able to follow their steps and make it happen.

Your Favourite Multiplayer Mods

Who says that the game the developers release has to be the end? We've seen it time and time again that mods can do a great job of extending the life of your favorite game, and these cool multiplayer mods go a long way towards proving that even further. Sure, some of them are a little rough around the edges, but that's part of their charm!
