I have to agree with you Keith. The controller was just so iconic. That's part of the reason I went out and bought a 2600!

I think one of the reasons the 2600 was so popular and had such staying power was the joystick. It was so physical -especially for a 10 year old kid. You could beat the crap out of it and really dig into the game despite the inferior graphics. A whole different experience compared to tapping away on a keyboard. I remember yanking away on that thing like my life depended on it. True 'Joy'...

I didn't notice that until you mentioned it, haha, nice catch. I always like seeing famous people before they were famous, it's funny to see how they change.

There are a lot of great little sites out there that you end up stumbling upon. It just goes to show you the following the Atari 2600 still has so many years after its release.

I remember that Pitfall commercial in that Atarimania screen shot above, but obviously Jack Black wasn't real famous then. He looks exactly the same :-)

this is wild - not 10 minutes ago I was googling and stumbled across "the 8-bit underground" (blog.8bitunderground.com) which from what i can tell is an effort somewhat similar to these sites or to Jason Scott's BBS Documentary, but this guy is documenting and preserving all of the crazy underground applications like wardialers and LD scanners for things like Atari and Apple computers, etc...

His sites dont appear near as established as atariage but it looks like a good start, and a fun place to hang out for any of us who were into the underground scene way back when.

You gotta love atari age though - what a great site.
