Snapchat has quickly become one of the most beloved apps out there – it’s hilarious, it’s convenient, and it’s also incredibly mysterious.

Honestly, from cryptic smiley faces to the elusive replay feature my enjoyment of Snapchat is always tempered by the sneaking suspicion that I’m missing out on something.

Thankfully, no matter what updates Snapchat does its basic functionality remains simple enough to use. A single tap and you can send your friends quick, impermanent photos of you as you go about your day, make an especially ugly face, or see something hilarious in a crowd.

Snapchat’s basic purpose is great on its own, but the app can do so much more than that! We want to make sure you know about all of its fantastic features, so we’ve answered twelve of the most common questions asked by perplexed Snapchat users.

1. What Do the Snapchat Emojis Mean?

If you use Snapchat regularly, you may have noticed that some of your friends have different emojis next to them. The Emoji language is a complicated one An Emoji to English Dictionary: Emoji Faces' Meaning, Explained An Emoji to English Dictionary: Emoji Faces' Meaning, Explained Confused by a text? Here are the commonly accepted meanings of popular emoji. Read More , but Snapchat’s is especially so – the emojis change daily and don’t seem to make any sense.

Snapchat does actually have a method behind the emoji madness (even if it’s impossible to figure out without help)

Smile EmojiSmiley Face – You are Best Friends with this person, but not #1 Best Friends (apparently the distinction is important)

Screen Shot 2015-12-05 at 9.52.44 PMYellow Heart – “#1 Best Friends”- You send this person more snaps than anyone else, and they send more snaps to you than anyone else

Red Heart – You have been #1 Best Friends with this person for two weeks or more

Pink Hearts – You have been #1 Best Friends with this person for two months or more

Screen Shot 2015-12-05 at 9.53.38 PMSunglasses Face – One of your best friends is also one of their best friends

Smirking Face – They send you a lot of snaps, but you don’t send very many back

Grimace Face – Your #1 best friend is also this person’s #1 best friend

Baby – You and this person are new Snapchat friends

Fire – You are on a ‘Snap Streak’ with this person – you have sent them a snap for several consecutive days and they snap you back every time (the number next to your fire emoji will increase with every day you add to the Snap Streak!)

Hundred – You have kept a Snap Streak going for 100 days straight!

2. What Do the Stars in Snapchat Mean?

The gold stars have been causing confusion since their release in October. They appear next to any other emojis a person may have, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to their appearance. Basically, what they means is that someone has replayed this person’s snap in the last 24 hours (it could have been you, or it could have been any of their other friends).

Screen Shot 2015-12-05 at 9.58.08 PM

The best way to interpret this?  Your friend probably has something pretty good to show you and you should definitely check it out!

3. What Are the Filters I Can Add on Snapchat?

They may not be as fancy as Instagram’s new filters Meet Instagram's Five New Filters (And Learn What They Are Best For) Meet Instagram's Five New Filters (And Learn What They Are Best For) Photography social network Instagram has issued a new update, which brings five new filters, the ability to reorder the filters, and thumbnail previews. Instagram is releasing new filters for the first time in two years. Read More , but the Snapchat filters can still go a long way towards making your selfies a little more artistic.

Take your photo the way you would normally, then swipe left or right to add filters – three basic colour photos can up your contrast, brighten your photo, or turn it black and white, while other filters allow you to feature your current speed, the temperature outside, or the time. If you are in a popular location (including most cities!) you may also see a geolocation filter specific to your area.

4. What Editing Can You Do on Snapchat?

If filters just aren’t personalized enough for you, never fear – Snapchat’s got you covered!

Three buttons in the top right corner of your photo allow you to place re-sizeable emoji stickers, add stylized text, or draw freestyle on your image. These features are a great way to add your own spin to the images you send – I’m sure your selfie in front of the Eiffel tower is great, but wouldn’t it be even better with a hand-drawn Godzilla and a couple of running man emojis in the background?

5. What is a Snapchat Story?

A Snapchat story is a collection of snaps that you’ve taken over the course of a day or event. The snaps are displayed in the order they were taken for 24 hours and can be viewed an unlimited number of times by any of your friends. This can be a great way to curate memories over the course of a day-trip or to set up elaborate tales or running gags (like in the video above!).

Add snaps (either videos or pictures!) to your story by pressing the square button at the centre-left of your screen and selecting “add”.

6. What Are Snapchat Discover and Snapchat Live?

Snapchat isn’t just for chatting your friends! Under the ‘Stories’ screen, you can see ‘Discover’ and ‘Live’ sections, which are both fantastic features that allow Snapchat to extend its reach beyond your circle of friends.

Discover Snapchat's Discover: Why It's a Social News Revolution Snapchat's Discover: Why It's a Social News Revolution Snapchat is more than just sending pictures and videos to your friends. Snapchat has grown into a powerful tool, bringing the world of news, events and trends to millions of users in a snap. Read More allows you to look at curated stories from sources like the Food Network, CNN, MTV, National Geographic, and the Daily Mail. These stories generally feature short video headlines and a text article (if you swipe up). Each of these stories is updated once every 24 hours, making the Discover feature the Snapchat equivalent of a daily magazine!

Live serves a similar purpose, but instead of being carefully curated content, it hosts fun news stories from around the world.

These stories are curated using Snapchat’s geolocation feature – if you are from the area Snapchat is featuring, you will see an ‘Our Story’ option where you would normally post to your own personal story. If you choose to submit your snap to the Our Story feature it will be reviewed by Snapchat staff and then added to the 24-hour story if it is relevant to the event. If it’s available, you may want to add the location filter to your snap and send it to the teamsnapchat account to increase your chances of being featured!

7. Can You Chat in Real Time with Snapchat?

Snapchat is wonderful for sending your friends updates the moment something happens, but communicating back and forth can be frustrating if your conversation is chopped into ten-second segments!

Thankfully, Snapchat supports real-time text and video chatting. If both you and your friend are using the app at the same time, flip to the chat screen (swipe right on their name) and then press the blue dot to start video chatting, or send an old-fashioned instant message if you would prefer!

8. What are Snapchat Lenses?

One of Snapchat’s new updates 9 Updates to Social Media That Happened When You Weren't Looking 9 Updates to Social Media That Happened When You Weren't Looking Most of the time updates to social media come with a lot of attention, but new updates to Facebook, Twitter Instagram, Tumblr, and Snapchat may have passed you by! Read More this fall was the release of ‘Lenses’– new filters that scan your face and then animate the space around (or on!) it. These filters are ridiculous and highly amusing – one artificially ages you, another turns you into a lizard, and a third turns your eyes into laser beams.

Accessing these filters can be tricky at first. While using snapchat, turn your front-facing camera on and hold your phone so that it frames your face. Then, press and hold on your face until an outline of your face appears on the screen. Use these filters with caution in public spaces – they might leave you making sillier faces than usual!

9. What Are Snapchat Trophies?

Most of Snapchat’s features make sense, but this one doesn’t really. Nevertheless, it’s worth knowing that Snapchat offers trophies to its users for completing various tasks around the app such as “sending a video snap” or reaching different set snapchat scores.

You can see your trophy case by swiping down on the camera screen to access your user profile, then tap the trophy above your icon to view any trophies that you may have received thus far!

10. What are Snapchat’s Paid Features?

Snapchat has recently begun charging for certain features, but they aren’t ones that will necessarily impact your use of the app. While five of the aforementioned lenses are free, several other lenses cost a one-time fee of $1.19 to access (after which they can be used an unlimited number of times).

As well, users currently have one free replay every 24 hours (just tap and hold on an already viewed snap to see it again), but can also choose to pay $0.99 for each additional replay they want.

11. Who Can See My Snaps?

Snapchat

Since its launch there have been concerns about Snapchat user privacy and safety Snapchat Leaks: How To Avoid Being The Next Victim Snapchat Leaks: How To Avoid Being The Next Victim Snapchat has reached such a massive scale that it's now more important than ever for users to be mindful of security while using the self-destructing photo app. Read More . It is important to be aware that snaps have been retrieved before and that other users can take screenshots or photos of snaps you send them.

While there is reason for overall caution when using the app, it’s also possible to change your settings to increase some security. The settings button can be accessed on the top right of your user profile screen (swipe down on the main screen) and allows you to set your username (use something other than your full name!) and who can send you snaps (set to “friends” or “custom” for the most privacy), who can view your story (again, set to “friends” or “custom for increased security).

As well, know that you can block users who are spam (or unfriendly) so that they cannot send you snaps or see any of yours.

12. Who Should I Add on Snapchat?

Most people use Snapchat to communicate with their real-life friends, but it can also be a great way to be aware of what interesting people are doing all over the world. Most YouTube stars, musicians and celebrities now have Snapchat and should advertise their username pretty freely. In addition, some brands are getting in on the action and are using Snapchat as a way to advertise promotions and sales.

It’s also good to know that many famous users will have a custom emoji after their name that indicates that their account has been verified – it’s a good idea to be skeptical of any non-verified account promising to be a celebrity!

When you send a snap to your friend in the personal chat section, does your friend have a limited time to open it? In other words if not opened within 24 hours that snap will disappear? Thx!

    • Briallyn Smith
      November 25, 2016 at 4:50 pm

Hi Apple Jacks – I don't think it's a 24 hour limit, but there have been reports of snaps expiring after an unknown amount of time.

It's nice to go back to old pictures and videos from the memories and apply filters to them. I saved a video in the fast forward filter and there's no way to revert to the original. This feature would be wonderful!!

Does sending a "chat message" count as a "snap".

If i send 10 "chats" to one friend, but send 10 "snaps" to another, do only the "snaps" count for best-friend status???

    Thx

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:26 pm

Hi La - "snaps" tend to be weighted much higher when it comes to best friend status, but Snapchat's actual algorithm is a mystery!

My girlfriend is mad that another girl is ahead of her on my best friend list and weve been best friends for more then two weeks so we have a read heart but my gf said that she cant pass my number 1 bestfriend bc she has a red heart next to her name is this true or does she not know what shes talking about

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:25 pm

Hi Chris – honestly, Snapchat has the weirdest algorithms for these things. If you and your girlfriend snap more than you and the other girl, then she should pass her eventually! (word to the wise though, never suggest to your girlfriend that she "doesn't know what she's talking about" - that won't go over well ;) )

    • Briallyn Smith
      October 12, 2016 at 7:23 pm

Hi Tim – the snap streak just means that you snap every day – you won't be bffs if you send someone else more snaps on average (not necessarily every day, but if you and your friend snapped 50 times one day, they'd be more likely to be your best friend than your girlfriend)

When u send a picture I know that adds one to my total! If I have a conversation with a person does that add to my total with every line , or does that not add to it at all? And if I send a picture to 30 friends does that add 30 to my total or just one?

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:59 pm

HI Jeri - the algorithm that Snapchat uses for your score has never totally been figured out - so I unfortunately don't know how the math works out! I think it's pretty safe to say that chats are "worth" less than pictures

    • Briallyn Smith

people say streaks so you don't lose ur streak, because u have to keep sending pictures so u keep it. and when they say recents they are most likely saying "go like my recent picture on instagram"

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:53 pm

Hi Megan - what Emily said below is exactly right :) You'll get a snap "streak" if you send a photo to someone every day for three days or more.

    July 21, 2016 at 7:48 pm

Hi Briallyn, I have a question. I have a sunglasses face next to one of my friends, but they said they don't have one for me. How is this possible? Should that mean that we both have a best friend in common?

    • Hunter
      July 21, 2016 at 8:04 pm

      Shouldn't*
Also, shouldn't one of my best friends have sunglasses next to their face? Or would it mean that maybe my friend with sunglasses sends one of my best friends a lot of snaps but that whichever best friend it is doesn't necessarily send sunglasses friend a lot back? I get a little confused with all that lol. Thanks for your help!

    • Briallyn Smith
      September 11, 2016 at 5:53 pm

Hi Hunter - to be honest, they should probably have one of those icons. Unfortunately, snapchat glitches like this happen and it can be really frustrating when you're trying to make sense of it all!

It's also definitely possible that it's the situation you described below - where your mutual best friend sends a lot of snaps with your other friend, but your other friend sends way more snaps to a bunch of other people.

Hope that helps a little, I'm sorry that I wasn't able to clarify it completely!

  24. Sara
    July 18, 2016 at 12:03 am

I was just wondering -- is it possible to have yellow hearts next to more than one person? Also, is it possible that the yellow heart goes away simply because you both stop talking to each other (even if the other person or you are not talking to anyone else?)

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 8:23 pm

Hi Sara - The yellow heart can only be had with one person at a time (because you have to be each other's #1 best friends to get it) - If you both stop talking to each other and aren't talking to anyone else it would be weird for it to disappear, but if you do talk to anyone else when you aren't talking to each other, then it's very quick for that other person to become your "best friend" and get rid of the yellow heart with your other friend.

Hi YEET - it will depend on how often you snap other people - if you stop replying to their snaps but are still actively using snapchat with other people, they should disappear from your friends list pretty quickly

  26. Jamm
    July 13, 2016 at 8:17 am

    Hi

Me and my crush had a pink heart, then red heart and now after the update its smiley face... We havent snapped for 3-4 days but usually the heart remained.

Does this means he has another persom he snaps most? As I havent, I only use it to talk to him.

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 8:20 pm

Hi Jamm - Unfortunately, I think that 3-4 day break was enough for him to have a different snapchat "best friend" - even if it was just for a short period of time, that's enough to get rid of the pink heart and change it back to a smiley face.

Next to one of my friends names there is a constant loading that says "sending" even tho there is nothing being sent. I've tried redo loading the app. I even removed her as a friend and tried added her back but the same sending symbol won't go away. This makes it so that I can't just click on her name to view snaps she sends me. Instead I have to swipe her name in order to see if I have a snap fro her.

      June 29, 2016 at 9:45 pm

you saved it in chat! you have to press and hold it to unsave it. if that doesn't work, that means the other person saved it, and you can't do anything about it unless they unsave it.

      nope

    • Briallyn Smith
      July 19, 2016 at 7:24 pm

Hi Peyton - Monica's right about that (thanks, Monica!). Snapchat just generally isn't meant to save things automatically, so you'll have to keep hitting that save button!

DEAR ARTICLE WRITER; don't end your article with "do you have any questions" if you plan to ignore everyone's questions. Bad form ;)

    Sincerely,
    an internet person.

      June 22, 2016 at 3:14 am

Hey Alyne, you're right! I've been pretty MIA the last month - although you'll notice that I've responded to most of the 100+ comments posted before May 23rd! Alas, six months have passed since I wrote this article and I have a few more articles to keep up with comments on now - but I appreciate the advice!
Thankfully, I have a few moments now so I'll be responding to you and all the other internet people out there.
Thanks again for keeping me honest!
      Briallyn :)

        Hi Briallyn,
I wanted to compliment you for being respectful when replying to Alyne's comment. It is unrealistic of her to expect a reply to an article written 6 months ago. You were polite in your reply despite her rude behavior. Hopefully your positive attitude will inspire Alyne to be more grateful and not feel so entitled going forward.
Thank you for all your articles and the hard work you put forth replying to all the questions you receive! Cheers!
        Nicole

Is it possible for you to be someone's best friend even though they are not one of yours?

    • Briallyn Smith
      June 22, 2016 at 3:15 am

Hi Jamie - I'm pretty sure that you can have "best friends" that don't have you as a best friend back - it's when you're at the yellow heart or above level that you have to be each other's #1 best friends. It's confusing, but so are most things about Snapchat!

Hi Shaan - unfortunately, that's a question you'd have to ask Snapchat tech support either through twitter or at this link: https://support.snapchat.com/en-US/co/bug-report

Hopefully your account has stayed open since!

Why does the snap streak appear but no best friend emoji ?

    • Briallyn Smith
      June 22, 2016 at 3:17 am

Hi Amanda - it's possible that both you and your friend snap a lot of people (and maybe snap other people more than each other)! In that case, you may not appear as best friends, but you can still have a snap streak with each other.

  39. susan
    June 11, 2016 at 8:42 am

I'm still confused. I'm trying to change the emoji that appears next to the number of days of the streak but it won't let me change is to , for example , a smiley face or a ring. it starts in the food section and I can't find it anywhere

    • Briallyn Smith
      June 22, 2016 at 3:17 am

Hi Susan - that's so weird that it won't let you move to before the food section! Have you tried closing and reopening the app/turning your phone on and off/making sure your app is updated?

I have to say - this problem has me baffled!

My friends and I decided to make an account where we could snap various snapchats of our last year in high school we recently graduated and we were about to open all the snaps we had sent... When we did though the snaps didn't appear only some that we had sent the night before why is that if no one had the account password but my friend and I and the snapchats were never opened ??

    • Lauren Peters
      June 16, 2016 at 4:27 pm

Unopened snapchats delete after a month? I also did this and all of mine were gone too

    • Briallyn Smith
      June 22, 2016 at 3:18 am

Diana, that's tragic!! I'm so, so sorry that those snaps got deleted - I think Lauren is right in saying that unopened Snapchats do eventually delete :( Ugh, hopefully you guys had saved some of those snapchats to look through with each other anyways - my heart breaks for you (that was such a great idea!)

How do I get rid of the spam above my friends' stories?

    • Malia
      June 11, 2016 at 2:09 pm

It's not spam, it's the Snapchat Discover feature.

    • Briallyn Smith
      June 22, 2016 at 3:19 am

Hi Gerard - Malia's right. The circles and stories you see that don't belong to your friends are the Discover feature - they can be annoying to some users, but other people really love them and enjoy seeing what's going on with different accounts!

Hello i was wondering if you gain points when you are not using snapchat?

    • Briallyn Smith
      June 22, 2016 at 3:20 am

Hi Nicole - Snapchat's algorithm is kept pretty top secret, so I'm not sure! Even though it seems like a weird choice, it could certainly be possible! Sorry I can't shed any more light on the subject!

  43. ElMonstrito5
    June 8, 2016 at 11:42 pm

Why can't I chat with some people on their stories. Most of the stories I view have the chat option, while some don't. Why is that?

    • Briallyn Smith
      June 22, 2016 at 3:22 am

Hey there - I wonder if maybe the people you can't chat with are people who you follow but who haven't added you back? I can't be certain, but that would be my first guess!

  44. thundrinmantis
    May 29, 2016 at 10:35 pm

    • Briallyn Smith
      June 22, 2016 at 3:21 am

Hey there - sorry for the late reply! Unfortunately, there's no way to get a snap streak back :( and you both have to be contacting each other every 24 hours in order to keep it going, otherwise it will end. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

hey, how can I send snapchats to celebrities when they don't add me back?

    • Briallyn Smith
      June 22, 2016 at 3:20 am

Hi Faradina - sorry for my late reply! Many celebrities choose to set their privacy settings so that people who they don't add cannot send them snaps - probably to protect themselves. It can be frustrating, but that's their choice for their own privacy!

Does the score go up if you don't open the snapchat ?

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 24, 2016 at 10:24 am

Hi Victoria - I'd imagine that your snapstreak score will go up if you both send each other snaps, even if you don't open them, but I'm not 100% on that!

  47. Allie
    May 22, 2016 at 8:14 pm

I haven't snapped this person in over two months and they haven't sent me anything in that time either, yet there's still a smirking emoji next to their name. I thought the emojis went away pretty soon after you stop sending snaps??

    • jak
      May 22, 2016 at 11:30 pm

They probably don't use the snap and you are probably still their #1 best friend. The emoji only goes away when you stop being the person's #1 best friend.

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 24, 2016 at 10:23 am

Jak's answer sounds right to me :) I think you're likely still their "best friend" because they've stopped snapping in general – an exception to most of the other emojis (which, you're right, usually disappear pretty quickly!)

  48. Emily
    May 19, 2016 at 6:29 pm

My snapchat opens up my snaps if I haven't. Say someone sent me a snap at 5 in the afternoon, it will automatically open by the next morning so I don't get to see whats been said

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 24, 2016 at 10:22 am

Hi Emily - that's really weird! Is it possible you've been opening it accidentally? If not, it might be worth uninstalling and re-installing the app to see if that stops the glitch – I can't imagine how frustrating that must be!

    • basketballislife
      June 1, 2016 at 8:14 pm

Hey Emily. Don't worry about it, when someone sends you a snap and you don't open it in the next 24 h i think, maybe less, it automaticly disappears just like the story does. So your phone doesn't open it, no need to worry, you can ask a close friend for help if you wanna check. Happy snapping.

      • basketballislife
        June 1, 2016 at 8:17 pm

And if its not that, you might wanna check if your account has been hacked and change a password or something.

Why have my streaks disappeared but on my friends they haven't? I tried deleting the app and reseting the phone and nothing's working. I ask my friends if we still have a streak and all of them said yes. So why has mine suddenly disappeared?

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 18, 2016 at 2:25 am

Hi Julissa - that's really strange! (Not a super helpful response, I know :( ) Sounds like it's a unique glitch (I haven't seen any other reports of this) - might be worth tweeting at Snapchat to see if they can offer you any kind of fix!

Is there a way to frame your face only, to limit what can be see in the background on a video chat call? Im new and have very little knoledge of this type of call.

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 18, 2016 at 2:24 am

Hi Roxanne - I don't think that Snapchat offers an automatic crop feature, but by playing around with where you choose to position yourself and how far away you hold your phone you can probably hide most of the background :)

  53. MO
    May 5, 2016 at 12:40 am

Hey cam you become best friends with someone by texting\calling them or does it have to be through "snaps"

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 6, 2016 at 2:50 am

Hi MO, I'm pretty sure that for all of Snapchat's icons they only count snaps, and not texting/calling - it's a weird choice on their part, and hopefully it will change soon, but right now that seems to be what they do!

      • Sarah
        May 15, 2016 at 12:37 am

You can get a streak by snapping or texting. As long as you contact them every day

  54. Molly
    May 2, 2016 at 3:32 pm

When you send someone a text message on sc and they get it before or after that comes up with a little smiley emoji what does this mean

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 3, 2016 at 10:34 pm

Hi Molly! My understanding is that that means they're online/looking at the message :)

  55. matt
    April 30, 2016 at 3:22 pm

So I can see one of my friends is a best friend with the emoji but when I look at her profile, I can't see her snap score. I can still send her snaps though. I read that this means she hasn't added me back. Is that the only reason I couldn't see her score or is there another?

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 3, 2016 at 10:33 pm

Hi Matt - that's weird that you can't see her snapchat score! Maybe directly ask her if she's added you already – it's possible that if she has her settings sent to "anyone can send you snaps" she doesn't even realize you aren't officially friends!

  56. Me

    • Lexy
      April 29, 2016 at 3:23 am

It doesn't do it for you. If you want to you can go to settings and scroll all the way to the bottom. You will see something that says clear conversations. If you click on that it should work.

    • Briallyn Smith

I was courious on something. Today when I sent a snapchap I left the screen open and once I saw the arrow turn white in the middle I knew that person saw it. But yet seconds later I look back down and the arrow showed red like I just sent a message. What does that mean and why did it do that.

    • Lexy
      April 29, 2016 at 3:24 am

You probably accidentally sent a picture without knowing it. It happens all the time

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 3, 2016 at 10:32 pm

Hey there :) What Lexy suggested is probably what happened – either that, or a little glitch that just happened the one time. Sorry I can't be more helpful in pinpointing what went weird there!

How long till I get back into my account after it being locked temporarily? ?

  59. Tam
    April 25, 2016 at 7:52 pm

Why do some people not have a chat feature? And when I send those people a snapchat, there is a grey arrow next to it. But I can see their stories. Can they see mine? Is there a at to turn off chat feature or something? Thanks.

    • Lexy
      April 29, 2016 at 3:21 am

Because they probably haven't added you back. That means they can't see yours and you cant send them snaps. You can only see their stories. this happens a lot when you add a famous person on snapchat.

      • Nancy
        April 29, 2016 at 2:57 pm

But if your setting on "Who can se my story" is "everyone" and not just "friends" then what really does that mean since people can't see your story unless they add you as a friend? Isn't that the same thing? It's very confusing.

        • Briallyn Smith
          May 3, 2016 at 10:30 pm

Nancy, I think that if the setting is "Everyone" then people can see your story if they know your username – you don't need to add them back for them to see that part of your profile.

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 3, 2016 at 10:29 pm

Hi Tam! Some people won't have a chat feature if they haven't added you back, just like Lexy said (thanks Lexy!)

Hi, i sent a snapchat to almost all my friends last night and only a few actually received and opened it it just says that everyone else hasn't opened it yet but i sent another snapchat today and they all opened it but it still says that they didn't see the one from last night. some of the people also viewed my story at the time i=of which i sent the snap last night. Is there something wrong with my snapchat?

    • Briallyn Smith
      May 3, 2016 at 10:29 pm

Hi Mark - that's really weird! Have you talked to them about whether or not they saw the snap? If not it might just be a glitch with your phone - try restating the app and your phone and see if that might help! Sometimes glitches just happen though, and it can be super frustrating to not know why!

But yesterday on my snapchat it didn't show any streaks with anyone, so when I snap my friend about how we have no more streak that tell me that we still have a streak. It's shown up on theirs. So why isn't it showing up on mine? And what can I do to fix this error?

Hi Nike - that's a very strange problem to be having - what kind of error message are you getting? Can you still send snaps to other people? I'd recommend contacting Snapchat support for this one, because it sounds quite out of the ordinary!

Hi Kylee - sorry for the late reply! As long as you both reply in every 24 hour period (not necessarily every day, but every 24 hours) you should be able to maintain the streak – hopefully you've kept it going :)

  67. Laura

where does snapchat get the people in your address book from?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 20, 2016 at 3:44 pm

Hi Laura - normally you add people one at a time, but if people in your address book have linked their Snapchat account to their cell phone number and you have them in your phone's contacts, you may have them automatically added to your Snapchat contacts as well!

  68. Faith Johnson

    • Zayne Husseini
      April 10, 2016 at 5:18 pm

      Hi Baylee
Sadly you cant get your streak back to 250 instantly your going to have to slowly build your streak back from 1

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 20, 2016 at 3:41 pm

Hi Baylee - Zayne is right, unfortunately there's no way to immediately get a snap streak back - although Snapchat does say that you can report a lost streak here: https://support.snapchat.com/en-US/co/bug-friends

      best of luck!

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 5, 2016 at 5:14 pm

Hi Amber - the pictures you take that you don't send to anyone get deleted, but if you want to save a copy for yourself you can press the download button (it looks like a little arrow) to save it to your camera roll!

  74. Penny

Thanks for the article! I was wondering if you could snapchat a story to just one of your friends instead of having all your friends see it?

    • Corey
      April 3, 2016 at 12:00 pm

You could by going to settings and changing who can see your story to custom and make it that only that person can see it.

      • Briallyn Smith
        April 5, 2016 at 5:15 pm

Corey's got a great suggestion there :) That's pretty much the only option I can think of too – unless you just wanted to send them each snap as a text message or something (which kind of defeats the purpose!)

Hi Sharon, have you updated your Snapchat to the most recent version? Both of those features happened in a recent update and as far as I know they should update on the iPhone 5 (they definitely have on the iPhone 5s, as that's what I use!) – you can check for updates by going to the "App Store" app on your phone.

Hope that helps - best of luck :)

Besides seeing the Our Story option, is there another way to know if you are in a Live Snapchat area before posting?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 6:46 pm

      Hi Harrison,

If you check your list of stories, that's a great way to see live our stories happening near you right now! Hope that helps!

Can you have more than 1 #1 best friend?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:25 am

Unfortunately, Snapchat's pretty exclusive with that title :) only one #1 best friend per person!

    March 27, 2016 at 1:26 am

i have a number one best friend and i want to keep her as my number 1 best friend as we have been number 1 best friends for 2 weeks now. if i talk to others on the chat (swipe right), will this affect my number 1 best friend moving down?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:25 am

Hi Martin - I wish Snapchat wasn't so secretive with their updates so I could give you a better answer - I do think that the actual snaps are the most important factor in determining which emojis are assigned, but I'm not positive about this (so to be safe, keep talking to your #1 best friend too! :) )

  79. Emily
    March 23, 2016 at 6:18 pm

Is it possible too keep the snap streak without opening the snap chats from the person you are having the streak with? only sending snap chat yourself? or do i have to open the snap chats to keep the streak?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:19 am

Hi Emily - To be honest, I'm not sure! It makes sense to me that you would just be able to send them, but to be safe I would open them too :)

So I have been snapchatting this person for a week now but they never snapped or talked to me where's the smirking emoji face then doesn't that mean I'm their best friend why isn't any emoji showing?

    • Briallyn Smith
      April 1, 2016 at 12:18 am

Hi Eliza! They should actually have a smirking emoji face next to your name - I don't know that you will necessarily have anything next to their name on your phone!

      Hope that helps :)

is it possible to start a streak with somebody if you only chat with them, but never send snaps to each other? please answer my question somebody, I wanna know. thanks

    • Chris
      March 16, 2016 at 11:18 am

no, I'm pretty sure you both have to send pictures through snaochat to begin and streak.

    • Briallyn Smith
      March 16, 2016 at 1:30 pm

Hi Kim – I think Chris is right (thanks Chris!) – you have be sending pictures in order to start and maintain a snap streak. Hope that helps! :)

    March 4, 2016 at 6:51 pm

I have a few celebrities on SC but on their stories it doesn't have a 'Chat' scroll feature and also, when I send them something it never gets looked at - granted this may be because I'm a randomer but could it also be because CELEBRITIES CAN CHOOSE WHO THEY WANT TO TALK TO AND RECIEVE SNAPS FROM?

I think this is a possible and good theory but I'd like to have it confIrmed/changed.

    Thanks - ????????????

    • Chris
      March 16, 2016 at 11:19 am

they don't open your snaps because they most likely have not added you back and you can not snapchat them if they haven't added you back

    • Briallyn Smith
      March 16, 2016 at 1:32 pm

Hi Alexia – Chris is right about this one too :) Celebrities generally have their Snapchat set so that they can only receive snaps from people they have added, and I imagine that they're pretty discerning about who they choose to add as friends!

This feature is actually available to everyone, but yes – they're not ignoring you specifically, they're ignoring everyone :)

My friend added me in snapchat a friend but I did´t get a quest and if I add him then we can´t send a snap. What we can to do?

    • Briallyn Smith
      March 16, 2016 at 1:34 pm

Hi Anne - that's a weird situation, and I'm sorry for the delay in replying! Hopefully you've got it sorted out by now, but I'd recommend checking the following things
      - check for your requests by navigating to the photo-taking screen, then tapping on the ghost icon at the top. Check "added me" and see if his name appears there (sometimes you won't receive a notification).
      - If that doesn't work, try adding him again, and make sure that he entered your name correctly
      - Lastly, if neither of those work, try restarting your phones and/or deleting and reinstalling your snapchat apps

Hopefully one of those suggestions works for you! :)

i had a 24 days snapstreak with my girlfriend and we started it on the day we started seeing each other and yesterday the number then icon disappeared even though we didn't miss a day, but the heart is still there

    • Briallyn Smith
      March 16, 2016 at 1:35 pm

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that :( Is it possible that you just sent a message and didn't send a photo on the last day or missed midnight by a few minutes? The heart means that you are both still best friends with each other, you just don't have the snap streak anymore.

It sucks, but you'll just have to build an even better streak this time! :)

OK so I have a smirk face next to a contact, and he is the only person I snap... does it mean I send him the most and he doesnt send me many? it just doesnt seem right that he sends me alot and i hardly send him any? Please advise.

    • Briallyn Smith
      March 16, 2016 at 1:36 pm

Hi S. gogo – sorry for the delay, but as far as the cryptic Snapchat smileys go, it does mean that he sends you more than you send him! That might not be a huge difference, and it may also take messages into account – so if you send him a snap and he sends several messages in response, the balance might swing to his side :)

  87. Nay
    February 21, 2016 at 4:01 am

Ok my question is I'm able to see friends stories but I don't have the option to direct snap with the snap story why is that? But other people in my story I have the option? What does that mean?

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 26, 2016 at 12:43 pm

Hi Nay - to be totally honest, this isn't something I've come across before. It's possible that it has to do with your friends' settings (I would wonder if it had to do with whether or not their account is public or friends-only) - it might be worth doing an unofficial survey of the friends where it is/isn't working and see if that's why!

(and let me know if you figure it out!)

    Hey!
When a girl send me a snap I don't get the notification, its just this one girl, I do get notifications from everyone else but not this one, how do I fix this?

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 26, 2016 at 12:42 pm

Hi Daniel - that's incredibly strange and shouldn't be happening! Have you tried restarting your phone? I would also try toggling the notification settings for Snapchat on and off, and maybe even try deleting and re-installing the app. I know it's a lot of silly fixes, but hopefully one of those will work - that sounds like a really frustrating experience!

I have an iPod 5 and my lenses filter won't pop up. I put the front facing camera and hold on my face and nothing happens. How do I get it to work?

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 19, 2016 at 1:53 am

Hi Ka - That's strange that it isn't working for you!

A couple of things for you to try:
      - Are you sure that you have the most updated version of Snapchat? Make sure it's completely up to date!
      - Make sure that your face is centred and head-on in the picture, with all of your face being shown on the screen and your eyes wide open
-you have to press and hold for about three seconds - it feels a lot longer than you'd think sometimes!

I hope one of those helps :) Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with!

      February 17, 2016 at 7:21 pm

Hi Emily - I'm so sorry - I didn't get a notification about your comment until just now! Do you mean that they are able to see a list of their friends' friends? Otherwise they may just be talking about symbols like the grimace face, where you can see that your best friend on Snapchat is also that person's best friend on snapchat! Hope that helps, but let me know if you still have questions!:)

How can i send a message if my back button and home button are over the 'send a chat' part

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 1, 2016 at 1:11 pm

Hi Maybelle - I'm not entirely able to picture what you're saying, so here's a couple general thoughts (but please feel free to give me more details if this is no help at all!)
      - you should be able to swipe right on someone's name to access chat
      - for me (on iOS) the "send" button is at the bottom right of my keyboard - what kind of phone are you using? Is the send button located somewhere else?
      - In a worst case scenario, you'd have to send all of your snaps as picture snaps - not ideal for sure, but would at least help you carry on your conversation!

I got logged out it of my account what do I do

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 1, 2016 at 1:09 pm

      Hi Alec,

Do you still remember your password? If so, it should be as easy as reopening your app and logging back in :) If you're still having trouble try re-installing the app, and if you don't remember your password there should be a "Forgot your password?" link on the sign in page that should help you out!

      Hope that helps! :)

    • Briallyn Smith
      February 1, 2016 at 1:07 pm

      Hi John,

Heyyyy I had a 73 day streak with someone and this morning it was gone? Any ideas on how to make it reappear? We know that we snapped yesterday and have the proof of those snaps in the recents. SO! Should I just build it back up, or is there a way to get it back?

    • Briallyn Smith
      January 15, 2016 at 3:02 am

Oh no!! That's so frustrating, especially because you guys know you sent the snaps! :( Unfortunately as far as my research has told me, it looks like you're going to have to build it back up - I wish I had a better answer to give you! Good luck rebuilding your snap streak - that's a pretty impressive one to have going!! :)

  96. Chloe Cooper
    January 4, 2016 at 3:44 pm

For the snap streak, to keep it going do you both have to send picture messages or can it work on the text side too?

    • Briallyn Smith
      January 13, 2016 at 10:02 pm

Hi Chloe - I'm so sorry, I didn't get a notification about your post. Brooke asked a similar question, and I spent quite a bit of time researching but I couldn't find a definite answer. It might be worth testing with one friend, but I wouldn't risk any of your long-standing snap streaks on it!!

    • Briallyn Smith
      December 21, 2015 at 5:26 pm

Hi Brooke! I've been looking everywhere for an answer and it looks like it's probably your best bet to keep going with either picture or video snaps if you want to keep building your snap streak :)

My grandaughter sends me pics with rainbows coming out of her mouth or funny eyeballs etc but I cannot seem to find any of those on my snapchat. I can add text or draw or add an emoji to my pictures but that is all. How to I access the other filters. I can access the filters that change my photo to black and white but nothing else. I use a samsung galaxy tablet.

    • Briallyn Smith
      December 21, 2015 at 5:23 pm

Hi Laura - those features your granddaughter is sending you are the Snapchat lenses (#8 in this list). You'll want to make sure your Snapchat app is totally up-to-date and then turn on your front facing camera while using the app. After that, press and hold on the screen about where your face is and a "scanning" net should appear overtop of your face. Once that is there, you should be able to select from different lenses available at the bottom of the screen.

Sorry for the delay in answering your question - and let me know if this solution works for you :)

Believe it or not there are some of us who still don't know. :-)

    • Briallyn Smith
      December 13, 2015 at 12:51 am

      hahahaha! Great suggestion Don :)

The general idea behind snapchat is that you take a picture using the app (usually a selfie, but maybe something fun that you're doing!) and then send it to your friends - with the catch being that your friends can only see it for ~10 seconds before it "disappears forever".

Dan did a better job of explaining it (and why it's so popular) back in February over here- http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-reasons-snapchat-teenagers-favourite-social-network/

      December 11, 2015 at 10:56 pm

      Thanks for your feedback Henrique!

Honestly, I have been surprised at how many of my friends don't realize everything they can do with Snapchat - I'm constantly showing them new features that I thought were obvious!

That being said, I do appreciate your feedback on the word "surprising" - maybe "essential" would have been a better way to go :)
