When computers were new, programs were small in size because hard disks could not store a lot of data. As the storage capacity increased, so did the program sizes. As a result, today we see some programs that are very large to download and install. 10K Apart is a website that tries to recapture that small-size-programs era and the creativity it resulted in.

10K Apart is a free to use website that presents a creative challenge to developers of all web apps: it challenges developers to create a web app sized less than 10 kilobytes. This means that the total file size including images, scripts, and markup cannot be over 10 KB.

What the developers have come up with in response to this challenge can be seen on the website. Intelligent web apps by brilliant developers are showcased on the site and all these apps, as mentioned earlier, are less than 10 KB in size.

These apps cover simple games, calculators, text tools, and many others types of applications. Visitors to the site can try all out these apps.

HTML5 apps are encouraged by the site owners and if your web app is less than 10 KB and works equally well in IE9 Dev Preview, Firefox, and a WebKit browser you can submit it to 10K Apart and compete for the prizes being offered on the site.

  • Very user friendly.
  • Encourages small-sized web apps.
  • Rewards brilliant developers with prizes.
  • Lets visitors try out many brilliant web apps.

Too bad they had to make it easy by allowing jQuery without it counting toward the 10k.
