Reasons for having a workstation

1. Functionality/productivity using office – a writer, maths based (excel), etc…
Windows – great but stability is terrible. The amount of times office crashes on me even in XP per month is ridiculous. And this has been going on for years even with my own workstations that I support myself. So thumbs up for MSOffice ability wise but never again on windows. MAC can now run office and thus is the manner I use it. Rarely crashes, about one/tenth of the time, and outlook is run on my VMware Linux has open office which is not so good but never crashes but once a year.

2. Gaming windows is better compatibility wise by far, far more games run on it, and DX11 has a lot of improvements. And I have to stay pretty stable with games, although still slower than a MAC in most cases when the physical hardware match. Linux is again limited and depending on the version is more stable and quicker than a MAC but not by much, but games are more limited than with a MAC

3. Communication – email, skype, msn
I love outlook, run my life on it, and not available for MAC yet?? At least not yet. Generally Windows is better with functionality in email programs and communication in general, without the stability issue MAC loses here. Linux is a non-starter, best email program is to use SMTP at the command line

4. Access to a server or your home PC
Linux is the best at this X windowing can be encrypted and much less waste of memory and processing.
MAC and windows sit together with windows maybe giving a small advantage on compatible programs with this functionality.

5. Designing – photo albums, pictures, videos, network diagrams in Visio + CADs
Apple wins this hands down with no exceptions. Linux has little to no decent graphics development software that is not under the $1,000 mark that also runs on windows or Solaris.
The only thing again is Visio nothing really can match it for displaying 2d IT based maps & structural diagrams.

And browsing is not added in above as most platforms run most html explorers so not worth mentioning

So then we are stuck with what do we want from our operating systems?
1. Stability/reliability
Windows -5 Linux +10 MAC +7
2. Security
Windows -9 linux +6 MAC +4
3. Ease of use
Windows +9 Linux -8 MAC +7
Linux gets such a low score here because so few people know how to complie modules or kernels
4. Speed
Windows -2 Linux +8 MAC +7
5. Compatibility with networks/software/codex/many many more
Windows +10 Linus -4 MAC +2

So where possible I use MAC OS X as my base system and then virtualize everything else as it is the perfect balance between stability and functionality.
But then cost is not an issue for me… if it was I would Linux a PC self-built and then virtualize my windows on top.
I could not live without Windows or Linux or Solaris for that matter, so they are stacked up either X windowed or virtualized.

he made no good points about why Mac is better. It is.. But not for the reasons he said. It is.. mainly because it’s a more innovative, stable, operating system. period.

if you are successful enough to afford a Mac.. go for it. if not, stick with a PC.

Guys, if you’ve been brainwashed by Microshaft, that’s fine…just don’t be so obvious about it.

Today, I finally got irritated with Vista and completely wiped the machine with a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10. I’m also planning to buy an iMac for myself and a Macbook Pro for my girlfriend.

Is it too much to ask for a WORKING operating system? Apparently, Microsoft thinks so…that’s why they finally have a decent OS named Windows 7. But since I have no use for Windows (only gamers have hardcore use for it due to compatibility and configuration of system peripherals), I’ll be converting over to Apple after 20+ years of anguish with Microsoft’s crap since DOS.

It’d be nice if Microsoft actually made an original operating system instead of ripping off ideas from Apple for YEARS…hell, DOS wasn’t even original (Gates bought DOS from a guy working out of his basement for $50,000).

I have tried to read most of these post but I don`t have a will to get involved in all this PC/MAC competitions.
I am a PC/MS Windows user since 1999 and my question is does anyone of you MAC users had experience with so-called “blue screen of death” as I have met this issue under the windows platform “EVEN” once under the Windows 7 which is very professional OS in my opinion!?
These things are pretty annoying in Windows you must admit…
I will not mention Win98, 2000, XP and thier kernel32 and .dll system files failures!

Another more important question that I have for all the experts here is next:
Ok. we all know that Apple/Mac uses intel chipsets, ati graphic cards etc…BUT, I have heard from some MAC users that these components were manufactured in a different (say better) technology than those for PC`s units. And that`s why hardware for MAC is far more expensive than hardware for PC although they use same “components”!

Is this the truth and if it`s how can you prove me that?

I believe I asked fair question and I expect fair and proper answer…

7. The best customer support? That must mean people must really be having problems with these machines they deem to be so “perfect”.

10. I’ve had my Dell laptop for almost 2 years, I use it everyday, and with the few problems I’ve had, I’ve still payed hundreds of dollars less in the end than I would have for a mac laptop with the same specs. Point 10 is debatable and hardly relevant in the long run.

3. And guess what? A PC can run OSX (Mac’s firmware)! An average quality PC can run OSX faster than a Mac, while running XP!

5. Actually, it does, and the few viruses that are out are fatal. As long as you have a brain, you won’t ever get a virus on a PC. Plus, there are great freeware antivirus programs that don’t slow your machine down at all.

10. Are you ****ing kidding? I am using a computer I purchased in 2001 that is running XP, Win7, and Ubuntu. I can also run OSX through VMWare while I’m running XP (can’t run it while running Win7 though)

As a Mac user I have to say the original arguments above are a bit lame. In addition the original article was a lot of fluff, advertising and such don’t make a better product. Yes it’s true the virus argument doesn’t totally hold water as the market share of Apple is much smaller than all the computers running Windows so hackers really don’t try to write viruses for Macs as much. But the unix based OSX is very stable and dependable, and I think the value of having two computers for the price of one makes the Mac less expensive than a pc. Plus in price most people compare apples to oranges. Can you get a PC laptop for $200-$300? Yes, but you get what you pay for. Can you buy an Apple laptop for under $1000? Yes, if you don’t mind buying refurbished from Apple (comes with a warranty) you can get really great deals on Apple laptops. Plus the MacMini is available for around $500. (true you have to supply your own keyboard, mouse, and monitor but it shows that Apple is trying to make less expensive computers) The thing about Apple is they only make professional grade equipment because they feel that everyone deserves a computer that just works, right out of the box!

Also I like the argument about ease of use with less hassles. My father who has a top of the line Dell with Windows XP (which I will admit is decent) has nothing but problems, virus updates, and software updates and crap every day so he has a hard time being productive. Also his Explorer is constantly crapping out on him as well, since he updated to the new version. Also it should be pointed out that his Dell at $2500 was way more expensive than my MacBook which I bought refurbished for $800. Heck it was even more expensive than my iMac which I paid $1600.

I on the other hand use a G3 from 1999 running the latest OSX and a newer iMac and a MacBook all running the latest OSX and they are virtually problem free. (in all fairness they are computers so I can’t say they are 100% problem free) The only problem I have is when running Entourage, which is Microsoft’s email application for OSX. The newest version from Office 2008 is constantly freezing up and quitting on me. I do have to say that I like the Office 2008 suite, but think that Apple is not too far behind with their iWork applications which cost a fraction of what Office costs. Plus with the Mac you get the iLife suite FREE which is amazing in helping to organize everything about your personal life (actually as a professional designer/fine artist I have used some of the software in a professional capacity). Also Apple (unlike Microsoft) has made Safari, iTunes, the iPod, and iPhone all compatible with PCs. Yes they don’t make the OS as open mainly because they experimented with Mac clones in the mid-nineties and it nearly killed the company they didn’t want to be just a software company. Also they have to give Microsoft versions of their OS otherwise MS wouldn’t be able to write OSX versions of Office! And back in the beginning of the MS/Apple wars it is common knowledge that Bill Gates stole technology from Apple to help create the first Windows OS and Microsoft has been copying Apple ever since. I think the Mac is far superior in dependability and ease of use to the PC. That’s from someone who started life on a Commadore 64 and used PCs all through college. It wasn’t until I started my first job in 1994 that I used my first Mac and I have never looked back. I still have to use PCs from time to time and while they aren’t bad, the experience is just not as pleasant, and you should be able to enjoy work.

But hey whatever, I can’t believe I just wasted and hour writing this when I should be working. LOL Hopefully you PC guys won’t totally take offense to what I have said, but I am sure that you will. It is possible to run by emulating with Wine, VMWARE or Parralels, or mac can boot into Windows through Boot Camp, but obviously you can access your Mac files but can’t edit them.

The only reason it is hard to make a virus for a mac is because its based on Unix, 40 years old and the one of the most secure OS in the world. Yes its probably older then your dad.

And yes its true, Microsoft is charging for £400 for some fix’s, Snow Leopard rules! Snow Leopard dosen’t really fix anything. It just makes Leopard better and faster!

Windows 7 just fix’s Vista’s problems, but dosen’t mean your any more secure on 7.

Mac is based on Unix, which is 40 years old and the most secure OS in the world, Unix is the backbone for nearly every device now. Including Your Cooker!

Linux is based of the Linux Kernal, which is an open source clone of Unix.
