Geeks love gadgets. This undeniable truth is the reason tech companies can get away with releasing incremental upgrades to their core products every 12 months, and still be richer than many countries.
But which gadgets did you, the enlightened and enlightening MakeUseOf readership, tell us were currently high on your wishlist? Read on to find out.
Wishful Thinking For Geeks
We asked you, What Gadget Do You Really Want Right Now? It appears this question was a little vague for some people, as the range of answers given pushed the boundaries out what we originally intended.
We were looking to compile a list of gadgets that were already on the market but which you, for some reason, hadn’t yet purchased. We did, thankfully, manage to compile that list, which you can see below, but a good percentage of those who took part in the discussion focused on gadgets that haven’t yet been invented. Which is another discussion for another day. Tomorrow, perhaps.
So, we had flying cars, teleporters, and the fanboy-baiting “Android phone that will not lag or hang up” given as possible answers. Obviously none of these gadgets exist at the moment, though we share your collective wish that they did.
Thankfully, many people read past the title and came to understand what was actually meant by the question. Which means we were able to pluck 10 existing products from the thread to form our list of gadgets you wish you owned:
- Nook HD+
- Oculus Rift
- Google Glass
- Moto 360 Smartwatch
- Oppo Find 7
- Google Nexus 5
- Sony Xperia Z1 Compact
- Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro
- Lytro Illum
- Any 4K TV Set
Google Glass and 4K television sets got a couple of mentions, and there were impassioned pleas for both the Oculus Rift and Oppo Find 7. Feel free to keep the conversation going by telling us which of the gadgets on this list you would like to have in your possession, or add your own suggestions in the comments section below.
Comment Of The Week
We received a lot of great comments, including those from M. Adams, Rajaa C, and Ed. Comment Of The Week goes to Redel E, who won with this comment (which has been slightly edited to make for easier reading):
Sony Xperia z1 Compact
It’s awesome specs wise but still too pricey for me.
Still using BB8520, yeah i missed a lot.
It’s rated as one of the best smartphones out right now.
Also tagged as best mini/compact phone besting the other mini offerings.
The phone shows that a phone can be small without compromising its specs.
Best alternative to 5 inch+ smartphone.
Sony understands that not everyone wants a huge phone, there are always consumers that would like small things, easy to carry and can be operated using one hand.
We chose this comment because it answers the question we asked; featuring an ordinary gadget that is available on the market but unobtainable for the person commenting. It also includes a rundown of reasons why this person wants this particular gadget over every other piece of hardware currently on the market.
We Ask You is a weekly column in which you have your say about a particular subject. We ask you a question each week, with the results compiled and compressed into a follow-up article the following week. This column is nothing without your input, all of which is valued.
