We’re approaching the middle of summer. This is the best time to spend sunny days and warm evenings outside. If you’re forced to stay in, maybe Sound Sunday can lift you up and add some summer feelings to your days. Besides folk and rock, this week’s edition also contains some modern electronic genres.

Boucan Sound System – Volume 1
Genre: funky, reggae, dancehall, electronic, hip hop, raggamuffin
This past week I spent a magical three days on the beach near Ste. Anne-des-Monts in the Gaspésie, a region in the south-east of Québec. This is where I met Phil, aka FunkyFlip from Montréal. He spends his summer working and jamming at the Sea Shack, is a paid musician with Mad’MoiZèle GIRAF, and during the past winter formed a side project with Marseille ragga MC Louzgain. Boucan Sound System was born from the desire to create a modern reggamuffin and dancehall sound. The result is a refreshing album that makes the perfect soundtrack for a summer beach party.

Friends With The Help – Selftitled Mixtape
Genre: hip hop
This album was suggested to me by Dave from Chamberlain Drive Records. He provided the following background on the project: “Friends with the Help is an independent trio that consists of Low Lux (vocals), Young Nige (vocals), and K-Rec (machines). The debut single, “East Van Shit” highlights some of the finer points of living in East Vancouver, including cheap greasy and delicious Chinese pastry, impromptu games of street hockey and extreme storytelling. Lux and Young Nige rapped together for two years before meeting K-Rec at a weekly rap night in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. K-Rec went on to join the group, largely producing and entirely mixing, mastering, and engineering the mixtape. The self-titled album showcases the best of what the trio has done up until now and can be simply described as a slaphappy yet embarrassingly candid soundtrack to life as a middle of the road fly dude.”

Heath McNease – Straight Outta Console: The Nintendo Thumb Mixtape
Genre: indie, electronic, experimental, game music, nintendo, hip hop
This album was suggested by Heath himself. He writes: “I’m a full time indie touring and recording artist. I tour 300 days a year and have released multiple albums in stores and on iTunes. I just released my first free mixtape. It was based on a song I wrote on one of my albums called Nintendo Thumb. (…) I also did a promo video for the first song off of the mixtape called Tanuki, which is, of course, Mario’s raccoon suit. (…) The popularity of that song has grown so much (…), so I released a free Hip Hop mixtape with 19 tracks featuring some of my favorite 8 bit Nintendo samples of all time.”

Various Artists – Stockholm Belongs To Us – A Labrador Records Compilation
Genre: indie, pop, compilation
|From their homepage: “Stockholm Belongs To Us – A Labrador Records Compilation picks up where the 4CD anniversary release Labrador 100 – A History of Popular Music left off. On Labrador 100 it was exactly one song from each release – this time we’ve allowed ourselves to deviate a bit from the concept. 22 tracks from almost as many releases from the year 2008 to 2011?.|

General Tornado And The Unicorn Platoon – No Humans Detected
Genre: indie, electronic, acoustic
UK musician General Tornado, formerly known as Double Ocean, has united with guitarist Neko and drummer Konrad to form the semi-virtual band General Tornado And The Unicorn Platoon. From their Facebook page: “Created by Phillip Gray, (23), the origins of the band were initiated from Gray’s University dissertation entitled: “Virtual Musicians: Human After All?” Gray explored the imagery, performance and personas of virtual musicians in the contemporary music industry from The Beatles and Sgt. Pepper to Daft Punk, Alvin and The Chipmunks, Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley and Deadmau5.”

Brian Powers – Selftitled
Genre: indie, acoustic, folk, pop, rock
Brian Powers is a acoustic singer and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. As he writes on his Twitter intro, his influences are Dispatch, Guster, David Gray ,and Dave Matthews. From his PureVolume Billboard: “[His] music has been described as anything from folk to pop to rock. Self-taught in both the guitar and piano, he also collaborates with violinist Christian Rougeau and Nick Gunty (drums, percussion, vocal harmonies). His folksier songs have a sad but hopeful feeling to them, and like other established artists such as Bright Eyes and Brett Dennen, he has been especially praised for his evocative, insightful lyrics and catchy melodies. His currently untitled album, which is home-recorded and self-produced with the help of the Gunty brothers, is expected to be released in early spring.”

Drewvis – For The Bin
Genre: indie, acoustic, ska, reggae, rocksteady, pop
Drewvis is the mostly acoustic band of Drew “Drewvis” Bristow and Paul “Pablo” Mason. For The Bin is “a collection of unused demos, unfinished songs, outtakes, and random tracks I’ve recorded and scrapped over the past few years for whatever reason.” Fortunately, they realized, that the material is too good not to be shared.
