LDBK Compilation – All School Flavor vol.1
Genre: jazz, funk, soul, beats, compilation
From the album page: “Since 2002, Laid Back connects creative minds from all over the world to help develop their art and get the word out. In every project we involve our audience by documenting every step of the process and generate interaction.
For this compilation, we broadened our collaborative spirit even further and asked our community to make this project their own by funding it. The CD you are holding is the result of our supporters joining forces to make this happen.
It was Pierre de Schaetzen who came up with the concept end of 2010 and we launched it early 2011 when Oli-B brilliantly reworked the Laid Back logo for the cover. Over 25 musicians and producers (from 9 different countries) immediately jumped on board and shared their latest tracks with us. Each of them has a long history with Laid Back. Growing side by side over the years, we’re proud to hear how they raised the bar for what will be remembered as an important milestone in Laid Back’s evolution.
We hope you enjoyed this journey and the music we compiled for your listening pleasure.”

K.Flay – MASHed Potatoes
Genre: indie, electronic, mashed, hip hop, rap
From K.Flay’s homepage: “You may not expect one of the most compelling new voices in hip hop to wield dual psychology and sociology degrees from Stanford University or find inspiration in the buttoned-up world of indie rock, but for K.Flay, defying expectations is simply part of the game.
Kristine Flaherty grew up outside of Chicago, devouring her father’s classic rock records and staying up late dancing to Parliament-Funkadelic in the living room. It was this same musical open-mindedness that would later spark her artistic development. She found her musical voice in college, fusing the eclectic power of the Bay Area hip hop scene with her own unique presence, inspired by strong, independent female artists ranging from Missy Elliott and Lauryn Hill to Fiona Apple and Liz Phair.
On stage, K.Flay is a one-woman whirlwind: whether she’s creating beats, singing, rapping or playing guitar, her wit and acerbic charm shine through. Her talents have led her to share the stage with artists including Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, and 3OH!3, where she quickly won over audiences who hadn’t seen anything quite like her before. Further setting her apart from the pack, she serves as her own producer in the studio, methodically infusing her hip hop swagger with a dose of sonic exploration.”

The White Panda – Bambooyah!
Genre: electronic, dance, mashup
From their Facebook page: “The White Panda formed when two boyhood friends discovered they had independently embarked on mashup careers in college. Chicago-based Procrast (Tom Evans) first blended Rick Astley snippets with 2 Live Crew grooves as a way to avoid productive activity in 2008, while DJ Griffi (Dan Griffith) embarked on the same mission, for a similar purpose, in L.A. Their combined effort, the White Panda, launched in 2009 with a single that topped internet radio charts days later.”

Kublakai – Lights for the Dark Nights
Genre: indie, rock, jazz, hip hop, rap
From Kublakai’s homepage: “In such a dynamic Northwest hip hop scene that plays host to some of the countries most outstanding break out hip hop artists, Kublakai still manages to shine bright. Drum conscious flow, delivered smoothly over a diverse range of beats, and an assortment of topics, its hard to label Kublakai but yet so easy to listen to.
Kublakai is a different breed of MC – smart, witty, complex, intelligent, funny, and lyrical. He is able to do it all and make it seem so simple. Touring the country, continuing to release projects and ever expanding his musical horizons – the future looks bright for this talented artist.”

The Specktators – Familiar With Floss

From their Facebook page: “The Specktators are a hip-hop/electronic group consisting of Matt Duda (known as Moe-T) and Patrick Duda (known as Packi). Using their childhood neighborhood, Groesbeck, in their name, The Specktators formed in October 2009 and have been thriving ever since. Andy Metz – The Great American Storyteller
Genre: acoustic, pop, rock, hip hop
From the album page: “The Great American Storyteller is a pretty sample-heavy album, but it definitely isn’t strictly hip hop sounding. Most of the tracks are focused around the hooks, which generally have a half-dozen or more vocal layers. Still, I think the content of a lot of the songs is pretty interesting. If I could go back and change anything, I’d probably cut out a few tracks and at least one of the interludes, but what are you gonna do? This album was recorded in Chicago, Illinois. My favorite tracks are Only I Can Fly, It’s Already Over and They Said (feat. Concept).”

Prof – King Gampo
Genre: hip hop, rap
From his Facebook page: “Forged from a history of hardship and partying, Prof’s music and career reflect the dichotomy that his life has been. His music documents everything he has experienced; from adversities as a child, like his father setting fire to their home or sleeping on a bean bag growing up, to his adult diversions, like his love affair with whiskey and women (in that order). Much the same, his career has also seen this duality. After grinding on the Minneapolis hip-hop scene for over ten years with little to show besides a small ravenous fan base, Prof has recently begun to make serious national traction on the back of his unique recordings and must see live shows.”
