There are times when working with vector images is what’s called for. Of course, there are also times (like photography) when you have to go with raster images. Vector images can be blown up to any size without loss of quality. Raster (or Bitmap) images become jagged when made larger.
There are some mediums like Flash animation, print ads, clipart, and logo art which lend itself to the vector graphic format for its elastic nature. It is also very easy to convert from vector to raster formats, but the same ease doesn’t hold true vice-versa.
From vector illustrations to 3D drawings, vector images find a lot of creative uses.
But creating detailed vector images takes patience and skill. You might be creating something as simple as an icon, or as cool as a T-shirt design. Having a stock of readymade vector images is a shortcut. If you are a designing greenhorn or an old hand, check out these ten resources for some inspiration and free vector art downloads.

All is old but gold :)
openclipart.org is the best free vector site – over 20,000 images and all are public domain.

Be careful about the legality of using the work on these sites: after all, of course a vector image is going to be free if you ignore copyrights & trademarks, especially that Brands of the World site. (It slithers out by saying in its terms of use that third party users are responsible for the content… and start their terms by saying how their own logo name etc are protected by trademarks and copyright!)
Even on sites like openclipart.org I’ve seen stuff clearly protected by copyright or copy-pasted from other websites.
Thanks for reiterating this common rule which we tend to forget while downloading stuff from the web. It is always important to note if the work has a license attached to it.

Thank you for this fantastic collection of free vector art download sites. I know another great site for free vector art: All Free Vectors
http://www.allfreevectors.com/
Thanks for the cool ‘search engine’. There are lots of other graphic sites also, perhaps not that well know, which have their own collections. They are also worth trying out.
I would also recommend to visit http://www.allvectors.com . Maybe it’s not as big as the ones mentioned in this post, but it’s updated constantly and has some vector graphics that you will not find anywhere else :)
