It matters less and less every year what operating system you use, because every year we all spend more time on our computer using nothing but the browser. And browsers are cross-platform. Want to have an argument about which systems are better? You really should be arguing about browsers, because they are now what matters most.

Steve Jobs has stepped down as CEO of Apple, and while he will continue as Apple’s chairman, his relinquishment of the title is a clear indication that he sees his time as Apple’s leader coming to an end. Why has he decided to step down now, and what is the legacy he leaves behind? Until he cashes in by writing an autobiography, we won’t know for certain, but that doesn’t mean we can’t give it some thought.

Once the love of all geeks, laptops are now defending their turf against smaller, lighter tablets that provide excellent battery life. While it’s not clear if tablets are the cause, laptops have seen their sales stall out recently. Yet in spite of their position as the new gadget wonder-child, some tablets try to be more like their older brethren by offering a physical keyboard.

As I sit here wondering how things will pan out for London after the riots, I can’t help but turn towards Twitter for relevant information about my local area. The media is repeating the same tired footage and quotes from various politicians, and everyone is using the events to forward their own political goals or views of society. Yet all I want to know is – are my wife and I safe here?

Many smartphone providers have recently taken steps to make users pay more for basic services. Tethering laptops and other devices to a smartphone used to be an included service on most phone plans (not all), since the process of tethering was available with the phone and both parties considered tethering data costs as included in the phone’s data plan. Tell us if you think being charged extra to tether your laptop is fair? Would you try to avoid it?
