Making The Web Interactive: An Introduction To jQuery

jQuery is a client-side scripting library that nearly every modern website uses – it makes websites interactive. It’s not the only Javascript library, but it is the most developed, most supported, and most widely used. It’s one of the building blocks of any modern website. But what exactly is jQuery, what makes it so popular, and why should you care about it if you’re starting out as a web developer?

Should Academic Articles Be Free Online? [MakeUseOf Poll]

Aaron Swartz was behind things we’ve all heard of, like RSS and Reddit, and believed academic journal articles should be free for all. He downloaded thousands of articles using his university log in, and was arrested and charged for it. Now that the dust on this case has settled somewhat, it’s time to take a look at this question again: should government-funded research articles be free for all online?

Toastify Adds Global Hotkeys & Notifications To Spotify [Windows]

One thing that has managed to turn me away from Spotify for quite a long time is its limited support in hotkeys and media keys. Spotify works great with a select few Logitech keyboards, but not so much with hundreds of others. For years, I’ve been a loyal user of Winamp Lite because of the awesome support for global hotkeys. Spotify has yet to improve in this area, but luckily enough there are third-party developers who are willing to pick up that slack for them.

The Pirate Bay Documentary ‘Away From Keyboard’ Released, And It’s Free [Updates]

Simon Klose, the Swedish documentary and music video maker, wants you to pirate his film, TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard, and he’s not even kidding. His documentary about file-sharing website The Pirate Bay is available for sale, on YouTube (free), or via Pirate Bay torrent (also free). The documentary covers the stories of Pirate Bay administrators Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, and Peter Sunde as they handle their 2009 Sweden court case about civil and criminal copyright laws.

Real-time notifications were one of the missing pieces for Tumblr and now it has gone ahead and added it to the dashboard. The idea is to increase user engagement with those one follows on Tumblr.

Windows 8 Version Of Minesweeper Includes Themes, Adventure Mode

Play a new version of Windows classic Minesweeper, complete with XBox achievements and a brand new adventure mode. Yep, I’m writing an article about Minesweeper. And why shouldn’t I? It’s a game that’s been included by default with Windows since forever, a comforting relic from the 90’s that until recently came with every new PC . No longer though. Windows 8 is the first version not to come with Minesweeper at setup.

How To Use Reddit Like an Old Pro

There are plenty of online communities which can be found on the Internet – Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube are easily the most popular and recognizable ones. However, there are plenty of other gems online which could potentially impact your life in a substantial way. One of these communities for me has been Reddit. I love Reddit not because of its design or features, but because of the culture that exists there as well as the content which people find and post.

Can’t Express Yourself? Google Adds Over 1,000 Emoticons To Gmail’s New Compose [Updates]

Google has rolled out over 1,000 emoticons for Gmails’s new compose, which you can add to your emails by clicking the “Insert emoticon” icon or with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+2. The complete emoticon collection includes some familiar faces such as Google Talk’s square faces and “secret” animated crab, but if you scroll diligently you’ll find many different types of animated and non-animated faces, food items, animals, weather icons, and pretty much anything you can think of.
