If the reports are true, Google could be about to add universal remote functionality to its Google TV app for Android TV devices.

Is the Google TV App Getting Updated?

Google already offers an Android TV Remote Control app allowing you to control Android TVs using your phone or tablet. However, the app has not been updated for over three years now. While it still works, the experience is frustrating as it is riddled with bugs and other issues.

However, an APK teardown of the Google TV app version 4.25 by 9to5Google reveals code related to a directional pad, enter and back buttons, and a system for initiating the pairing process with an Android TV.

The team at 9to5Google was also able to trigger the pairing process. However, since the feature is still a work in progress, it could not find any nearby devices on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Making the Google TV App More Useful

Adding universal remote functionality to the Google TV app will help increase its usefulness. The feature will allow you to control any Android TV device using your Android phone or tablet, provided they are on the same Wi-Fi network or paired via Bluetooth.

The universal remote feature in the Google TV app will likely feature an updated UI/UX to keep up with the current times. Google could also add other relevant features to the remote, including dedicated mute and Google Assistant virtual buttons.

Since the feature is still in development, it will likely be a while longer before Google rolls out the universal remote feature in the Google TV app to the public.

What Is the Google TV App?

The Google TV app was formerly known as the Play Movies & TV app. In other parts of the world, the app is still known by its old name.

It's a one-stop app to find content for streaming or renting across all major streaming apps, including Disney+, Hulu, CBS All Access, and more.

The Google TV app is only available in the United States for Android phones and tablets.
