Google is yet to launch the Pixel 5a 5G, but leaks and rumors surrounding the Pixel 6 series due to launch later this year are already coming in thick and fast.

A new leak has detailed the complete specifications of the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro. It also indicates that Google plans to offer up to five years of software updates for its upcoming Pixel phones.

The leak points to the Google Pixel 6---codenamed Oriel---coming with a 6.4-inch AMOLED display, 8GB RAM, and up to 256GB storage. The dual-camera setup at the rear will consist of a 50MP primary camera and 12MP ultra-wide shooter. Google Could Offer 5 Years of Software Updates for the Pixel 6

The interesting tidbit from the leak is that Google could offer up to five years of software support for the Pixel 6 series.

The company currently promises three years of OS and security updates for Pixel phones from the month they first went on sale. For example, the Pixel 5, which first went on sale in October 2020, is eligible to receive security and OS updates until October 2023.

Android Dark Mode

While impressive compared to other Android smartphones, this pales compared with iPhones that Apple supports for five years or longer. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which first launched in September 2014, are eligible to receive the iOS 15 update due to release later this year.

Samsung offers slightly better software support for its Android devices, as it promises three OS updates and up to four years of security patches for Galaxy devices.

The leak does not clarify if Google is looking to offer up to five years of OS updates or only software support for the upcoming Pixel 6 lineup. The latter would mean that Google could release three or four major OS updates and then support the devices for another year or two with security updates.

The Google Pixel 6 series is rumored to launch in October. Before that, though, Google will launch the Pixel 5a 5G as a successor to the Pixel 4a from last year.
