Zapr: Share Files Over The Internet From Your Desktop

Zapr is a file sharing program for your desktop. Using Zapr you can share files ovre the internet in a whole new way. Zapr lets you create a personal web server on your computer and then use it to distribute the files online.

Zapr creates a simple link to any shared file or folder on your PC. When you want to share that file with someone all you need to do is send the link to that person via email or IM. The recipient only needs to click on the link to access the file.

Similar to online file sharing services, Zapr allows you to create both public and private web links. While public ones are accessible to anybody, the private ones can be viewed only by people who know the password.

    I am wondering how your performance is in Europe. Are you in Scotland?

    Currently we have servers in China, Korea and the US. We have been
    concerned that our European users will not get great transfer speed as
    they will mostly log into our US West Coast servers.

    If you have a minute I would appreciate you give us feedback on the
    turnaround download speeds you get when you “share” a large file to
    yourself. We have already done this test with many contacts in Europe
    and the speed have been varying but not as fast as we would like. More
    information is better. If you are busy then not to worry.

    We are considering placing server capacity in the Amsterdam IX so that
    our European users can enjoy better performance.

    Once we get our speeds up in Europe I would like to offer something to
    all the AllPeers users who were left without their beloved service
    when it was shut down.

    I really like Zapr, but one feature I would like to see added is being able to download entire folders, as it is now you can only download one file at a time, for example if I post a folder of 50 songs, the person downloading the files I posted can only download them one at a time, as opposed to the whole folder, if this feature was added it would really improve Zapr….

      I thought about a “Download All Compressed” button but this may cause some other issues.

      What if I the folder was very large with very many files? This function could cause the sharers PC to slow down as it zipped the content. It could also use a lot of disk space to temporarily to store the new compressed file as well. What if 100 viewers did this? The sharer’s PC could grind to a halt. We have to be mindful not to noticeably impede the performance of the sharer’s PC.

      One alternative is to is to allow viewers to select which content items are to be compressed and download just them as a single file. This could also be tedious however and is not a complete solution.

      Each additional function we add will please one group of users. There are many options for functionality that we can offer. However we also want to be mindful of function creep. We keep strict adherence to our mantra – Really Simple Sharing.

      Thanks for your suggestion and it is well noted. We will try to think of an innovative way to provide simple but more powerful downloading.

    Thank you for your response DK, you make some valid points, your idea for the option to compress the files is a good one that hopefully be looked into in my case my files would only be shared with 1 or 2 other computers, so lag wouldnt be an issue, but can see others having the problems you described.., Thanx for a great program that I’m sure myself and many others will enjoy using….

    For sending files I would usually use a service like megaupload or just send it through an instant message. I do see the value in this kind of remote access, but for me it doesn’t really apply to my needs.
