I have been happily making websites using Dreamweaver for years. However, I’m now told that HTML and static sites are on the way out, and that dynamic web-sites are the new thing. Particularly Joomla! I’m told. But I find the whole experience totally baffling. The videos I have bought, that claim to take on through gently, are boring and assume too much, there are no colleges within fifty miles that offer courses in CMS let alone Joomla! (which even they had not heard of), there are no books on Joomla in the local bookshops or county library, the conversations in forums might as well be in Urdu for all that I understand them, and I’m feeling like I ought to crawl into a little corner and die!

Unless, dear advisor, you know of a good book that will take a sixty year old GENTLY through setting up Joomla! websites.

Is there any hope for me?

I have heard some positive things about Joomla but haven’t tried it personally. As regarding the tutorials try searching for them on de.licio.us (ex. Joomla Tutorials). That’s what I would do ;-)

By the way, if you’re looking for a flexible CMS (to build dynamic websites) make sure to check out Drupal (http://drupal.org/).

I have been trying use Joomla for 2 years. My ISP guy and his staff can develop Joomla, but they are HORRIBLE teachers. i have been on the same quest, bought some videos, books, and have read and read and read and read. It seems to me a person needs to take some php, html, cascade style sheets classes, or keep looking for a good teacher or developer. I’ve searched for anything better; nothing comes close to the available features for Joomla. Drupal and Mambo are similar products…. the different names and products a result of partners parting. I havent tried Drupal, but I have tried Mambo…..same level of difficulty. What is needed is a hands-on week-long course or tekkies that know how to communicate with end users. has been very frustrating.

I heard lots of positive things about both of these apps, though Drupal seems to be slightly more popular. However, at the end it all depends on the service you need it for.

I’m in the Buffalo, Western New York area and am looking for boards of organizations that would be interested in welcoming a new board member.

I am a professional with a background in education, grant writing and program budgets. I am very familiar with the duties and responsibilities of board members and feel that I have a good deal of knowledge, skill and experience that I can offer a board and an organization as a board member. I am interested in organizations in the areas of education, youth advocacy, health, and the arts.

Does anyone know of an organization in the Western New York area that I might approach?

I appreciate your assistance.
