Over the past two days I have been using what could be called a modern ‘Word-a-Day’ calendar. It’s called Artwiculate and its aim is to teach users new words and their meaning each day via Twitter. As a writer and fact enthusiast – I see this as an awesome new Twitter tool.

It works by announcing the Word of the Day on its homepage and on its Twitter account. For example, today the word was ‘maven’; meaning an expert in one’s field who rejoices at passing on his/her wisdom. Then the users must tweet, using the word ‘maven’ in context. So my tweet read:

‘While I like writing, it’ll be some time before I’m looked upon as a maven in my field.’

Tweets appear on the Artwiculate homepage ready to be judged by the community. If it is more popular then you’ll earn more points which in turn will make you rise through the leader boards.

Artwiculate has just come out of its Beta phase and is now completely live and has a following of almost 2,000.

I think that Artwiculate is a simple, yet effective way of learning new words. The words that they choose are interesting and you may even use them in every day life. After all, their slogan is “The twitter-based Word of the Day competition that helps clever people look clever and helps the rest of us learn new words.”

If you liked this tool you may also check out similar websites VocabSushi and WordSpy profiled earlier.

Wordsift is a new tool which can help you get more information about a word or a sentence by displaying the related images from Google, visual thesaurus showing word relationships and more information about the text, all on one page. The tool was created primarily for teachers so that they can visualize text vocabulary structure and share it with their students.

Here’s how it works:

1. You enter a word or text in the big box on the Wordsift homepage and press ‘ Sift ‘.
2. On the next page you get a tag cloud which has important words in the text.
3. You can click on any of the words and it displays Google image search result and visual thesaurus results below it.
4. It also displays more sentences created from that word on the same page.

For more info watch demo video below:

You might also want to check other similar apps for visualizing text and words which we have profiled earlier.

HotWords is a website that can be used to see what others are searching for. It can gather the trend of searched keywords across major search engines and give you a host of statistics like daily and monthly top 10 keywords, top losers and gainers of a day etc.

With the help of this tool you can search for keywords rankings, keywords that are gaining or losing position over a period of time. Also it provides an option to view historical reports where you can view keywords rankings for past 3 years. I think this tools can be particularly useful for affiliate marketers searching for hot niche or for bloggers searching for a topic to write on. After all it makes perfect sense to write on a topic that world is searching for.

By default this tool is family safe. But if you wish to search for adult keywords you can always turn Adult Filter off by clicking on Adult Filter On/Off link given on top-right-side.

Other such tools are either paid or show limited data for one search engine only. Hotwords has partnered with major search engines and the trend is gathered on a huge sample of 6 million searches per day.

Features:

Tells you what people are searching for.

Find hot keywords across a period of time.

Daily and Monthly keywords ranking.

View keywords rankings for past 3 years.

Free and no registration.

Tip of my tongue is an innovative web app which lets you find the words you’re sure you know but just can’t remember at the right time. It gives you various parameters to choose from, like what it starts with and contains, what could be the letters it must have or can’t have and also refine the search by maximum and minimum length.

Another cool thing about this site is the real time search feature. As you enter the parameters, it starts showing the search results on the right hand side which includes the possible words along with their meanings. So next time you don’t remember a specific word, try this site out.
