We all have experienced bad cab drivers – some talk on the phone while driving, some take the longer route to your destination, and some simply refuse to take you to a specific place. Normally we ignore such drivers because lodging a complaint through the proper channels would take up a lot of our time. But thanks to a tool called ReportATaxi you can now easily lodge complaints against bad taxi drivers to the Taxi & Limousine Commission.

ReportATaxi is a free to use phone app for iOS devices. The app is sized at 1.6 MB and compatible with iPod touch, iPad, and iPhone running iOS version 4.2 or later. The app is quite simple to use. You begin lodging your complaint by entering the taxi medallion number or using your camera to shoot a picture of the taxi.

In the end you select your complaint type from the available options.

Currently the ReportATaxi app works only for New York City.

FareShare: Enables Easy New York Taxi Sharing With Other

Taxi fares can cost you a significant amount of money if the destination is far away. Often to ease the burden, people find others traveling in the same direction and split the cab fare. Now there is an online service to facilitate easy new york taxi sharing and it’s called “Fare Share”.

You can use the service to find people in New York City who will be going in the same direction as you are. A formula on the website then calculates how much each person on the trip should contribute to the total amount, based on their destination’s distance from the departure point.

You can make use of FareShare through email, SMS messages, and through your iPhone. To be recognized by your cab partner you can upload a photo to your Fare Share profile or choose to be selected by the apparel you will have on.

If your experience with your cab partner was not satisfactory, you can report him/her to the website through a feedback system.

These abovementioned features and others help Fare Share serve its purpose wonderfully.

TriptropNYC is useful tool for New York residents and visitors. It is a travel time map application which lets you find out how long it takes to get from one place to another in New York City. All you have to do is enter an address and click the ‘Map it’ button, TriptropNYC will then apply color-coded layer on to the map and show the time it takes to get anywhere else. You can also compare two different addresses on separate maps presented side by side.

The time estimations are derived from Metropolitan Transit Authority station-to-station commute time data and walking calculations.

RideCharge is a useful online taxi booking service which allows you to book cabs, sedans and shuttle online or on your mobile phone. The registration is free and once you book the taxi, you get instant confirmation alerts. You could also pay through your cellphone and RideCharge would generate an online receipt for you which can be printed out anytime.

It works great on Blackberry, Windows Mobile and has a nice app for the iPhone.

Please also note that RideCharge taxi booking currently available only for users within United States.

Taxi Magic is a new taxi booking app for iPhone that lets you hire a taxi by pressing a couple buttons on the touch screen. You do not need to call a taxi service and speak to the operator. The application instead connects you directly to the taxi routing systems and lets you book your journey from there. You can further track live updates of where your currently taxi is and when it will arrive at your location.

How doe it work?

2. Your iPhone determines your location and presents a list of nearby cab services. While some listings are only phone numbers, others fully support Taxi Magic’s ordering system.

3. Choose one of the supported cab companies and enter your exact street address.

4. TaxiMagic then takes you to a status screen that will alert you as soon as your cab is dispatched and show you the driver’s name.

5. Track the cab location and how far away it is on the status screen.

TaxiMe: Taxi Fare Calculator for New York

If you’re a frequent cab taker and live in NewYork then TaxiMe has something for you. It’s a Google Maps mashup that helps you calculate (estimate) how much your taxi cab fare will cost. Quick and convenient. At the moment TaxiMe’s taxi fare calculator works only for New York city.

To estimate the fare for your route, simply enter starting and final destination points and click “Go!” button. Next it’ll give you the estimate and show the driving route on the map.

If necessary you can also see the driving directions.

You might also want to check out a Google Ride Finder. It lets you search for available taxis, shuttles and limousines in your locality. It gives you the actual location of each vehicle in the area. Works with about 10 major cities in United Sates, including New York.

Looking for a ride to an airport, movie theater, your favorite bar, shopping mall or any other place? Need a limo service as soon as possible? Using Google’s Ride Finder service you can search for available taxis, shuttles and limousines in your locality. It shows you the actual location of each vehicle in the area.

Currently the service supports only 10 major cities in the US. These are:

Atlanta, GA
Austin, TX
Baltimore, MD
Chicago, IL
Dallas, TX
Los Angeles, CA
New York, NY
Phoenix, AZ
San Francisco, CA
Washington, DC

There is nothing to install or download, simply enter a zipcode, the name of a city or your exact location and it will give you an area map along with the location of each vehicle. Vehicles are shown as little balloons (see screenshot below). Once you have located the vehicle you need, just call the service provider to reserve it. The company phone numbers are provided as well.

The Google Ride Finder is still a beta product and being constantly improved. So expect a wider coverage in the near future. For additional details see their FAQ section.
