WorldClock is an interesting online clock that shows real time statistical data of the world. The data includes world population, birth, death, divorce, abortion, HIV, cancer incidence… etc. You can view real time stats for one year, month, week and day.

The stats presented on the site are averages of the data gathered from sources like World Health Organization, CIA Factbook ,US Census and others.

Global Stat Counter (originating for its parent company ‘Stat Counter’) is a web app which keeps track of the global trends when it comes to web technology and the internet. The homepage consists of a huge trend graph which plots statistics from the previous few months. The data is based on a monthly pageviews (5 billion) collected from across the StatCounter network of more than 3 million websites.

For example, when I visited the site the graph showed the percentage success/fail of the big search engines; Yahoo!-Bing, and Google. The graph was easy-to-read and what’s more it was accompanied by a news story. This is something I found particularly fitting with Global Stat Counter – it gives the news as well as the statistics; I found this makes the graphs more credible and without them the site would just be a bunch of graphs with no real context.

There are several categories which Global Stat Counter keeps track of in the tech world. These include; Search Engine Usage, OS Usage and Browser Usage. Not only this but you can also select where in the world you want to get statistics from. By default it is set to Worldwide but you can further narrow it down to continent or even to a specific country.

When you have found the statistic you want you can do one of three things; save it as a jpeg image; download it as an Excel document or embed it using the HTML embedding code provided.

At first glance, PingTest might look like any other broadband speed test service out there. However, it isn’t one of those. It doesn’t check the speed of your connection. Instead it checks the overall quality of the connection that determines how well it can stream videos, play music and online games. You may call it broadband quality test tool.

When you click on “Begin test”, it first selects a server from where it’ll run the test. Then it runs various tests to check for packet loss, ping and jitter and rates your connection accordingly. You could also choose to select a different server and re-run the test.

Google Flu Trends uses “aggregated Google search data to estimate flu activity” in a certain country. Basically, this app consists of an interactive map that responds to your cursor as shown in the screenshot. When you place your cursor over some country you’ll get an indication of the flu intensity in that country from ‘Low’ to ‘High’.

To get more details, click country of your interest and you will be presented an overview with a heat map and a line chart showing the flu trend over a period of time.

Many countries such as the UK, Ireland, Iceland, China and all of Africa are omitted from the map. However you are given results for all of North America and continental Europe where flu trends (especially with Swine Flu) are on the rise.

You can also download Flu Trends Data, which is all of the data concerning flu trends dating back to 2003.

It aggregates internet stats and facts across various sectors like technology, consumer trends, media consumption and media landscape in a simple interface. The data is sourced from a plethora of online and offline vendors which includes BusinessWeek, Internetworldstats.com, The Economist and many more. You could search the stats, check a random stat and even submit a stat. And while it is on their UK domain, it does feature information relevant to those outside UK.

History Tree is a nice add on for Firefox which lets you visualize your browsing history. It displays the websites in a hierarchical structure, hence the name History ‘tree’. It can show such four different history views, show you the screenshot of every page you’ve visited and even pages which you can no longer navigate using the back and forward buttons of the browser.

Although the add-on is currently in experimental mode, it’s got some great reviews and doesn’t appear to have any bugs at the moment.

About:me is a new Firefox add-on that lets you view your past browsing history and download activity in a way that makes sense. Unlike default browsing history feature, About:me presents browsing history on an easy to grasp graphs from where you can easuly see the websites you visit most including the individual pages visited most often on each website.

Additionally you can view hourly browsing activity and check if there are any patterns. There is a “Downloads Stats” section that shows the distribution of downloads, as well as daily download activity.

Once you have installed the add-on, the sats can be viewed by typing about:me into the address bar. You may want to bookmark that page for quicker access.

KmlFactBook is a unique site which lets you load data sets from CIA Factbook and WRI Earthtrends into Google Maps and create cool presentations from them. You can view facts such as population of various countries, their GDP, immigration rate and a lot more on Google Maps and on Google Earth. If you would like to view the data offline then you can download it in kml format and open it with the desktop version of Google Earth.

It provides various filter and map viewing options. You can visualize data on the map in both 2D and 3D format. In order to use 3D, you would need to install the Google Earth browser plug-in.

The traffic accident statistic data is obtained from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. (NHTSA).

To check the accident stats in your area, simply enter a city name, zip code and click on the “GO” button. Yhen you should see accidents in your area shown on the map marked with different color markers. Each color representing particular number of incidents. To learn more about specific accident simply click on its marker.

Statbrain is a website traffic estimator which shows the estimate number of total visits to a site per day. It also displays information like site’s Alexa ranking, the number of backlinks to the site as seen in Google and Yahoo, and the location (country) of the server on which the site is hosted.

The number of visits constitute the total number of visitors to the site per day and not unique visitors, which means that repeat visitors in a day could be included as different visitors. Hence the estimate numbers are likely to be a bit bloated.

The main advantage of Statbrain is that it’s a simple and quick way to check the traffic rankings for any site. There are many other analytics tool to take care of in depth stats analysis so if you’d like to have a quick glance at the total traffic to a site, this should be the ideal tool.
