Many of us, including some of the biggest news agencies like BBC World News use the Twitter trends function to gauge public reaction and interest in a subject. ByTagg is a desktop application which can keep an eye on your favorite blogs, current news, Twitter postings and even search results and alert you about topics you are interested in. The byTagg desktop client is completely free to use and currently works on Microsoft Windows XP, 2000 and Vista.

Setting up the alerts is really easy, user basically needs to select where byTagg should look for updates (news sources, blogs, web etc.) and provide alert keywords. For instace, if you setup news alert for “iraq” you will only get alerted on Iraq related news. Same applies on alerts on blog feeds. As for alerts on changes in search results there are advanced options that allow user to setup alerts for specific phrases and restrict them to specific domain.

The alerts include the title and a brief summary of the page.

Social Mention is an unconventional search engine which is primarily geared towards searching the blogosphere and the social media world. It can search through blogs, microblogs like twitter, bookmarking services like delicious and also tracks images, news and videos from various sites like Flickr and YouTube. It also has a ‘ Comments ‘ tab which proves to be useful if you want to search conversations on sites like Friendfeed.

Social Mention can also be used for ego-surfing i.e to track your own reputation in the blogging and social media world. Although it doesn’t produce the search results instantly and is a bit slow in pulling up the results, it’s a useful tool nonetheless.
