It’s simple: what Justin.tv and uStream are to television, Spreaker is to radio. If you want to broadcastyour own online radio show, you can do so in only a few clicks and if you want to browse radio streams from around the country, it’s as simple as pressing “play.” There’s a wide variety of user-created audio streams for you to select from, meaning there’s a good chance you’ll find a station you like.

As is the case with any site like this, some of the content is legal and some are questionable. But if you’re a fan of world music you’ll find no shortage of content to pick from here: in my perusal I found several broadcasters showing off the flavor of their home countries to an international audience. The site’s worth checking out for that alone.

Internet radio has become a popular entertainment source especially for music and podcast-like talk shows. I have found a great application that allows you to listen to Internet radio on the move without shelling out for an expensive smart phone.

VirtualRadio is an application for Java enabled cell phones which allows the user to listen to Internet radio stations on their cell phone. The app uses the GPRS internet connection available on almost all cell phones to download the audio at a rate of 32kb/s. The audio quality is very high and music is crisp and uninterrupted.

There are loads of different channels to choose from and categories (called groups) to browse through channels which interest you such as ‘Music’ and ‘Politics’.

The app is completely free to download and use, although GPRS costs apply and vary depending on your network.

I’ve just confronted an interesting web-based music service that claims to provide you with free and legal music streaming online. Tunerec acts as a platform for music where you can create your own music library with millions of available tracks.

To get started, simply visit Tunerec and sign up for a free account. It is in private beta but you get your account straight away. As soon as you’re logged in, you will be able to record music from thousands of radio stations to your playlist. You can then access your playlist from anywhere anytime you like. Note that it has to record the streams first, so it may take some time to save them in your database and become accessible to you initially.

You can find and discover artists, tracks and genres from 20 different categories including rock, metal, punk, pop and more. Easily organize your tracks and share them with your friends or invite them so that you can subscribe to their playlist and share tracks amongst yourselves.

Why is it legal?

According to a Swedish newspaper, Tunerec has signed an agreement with STIM (Swedish songwriters association). It makes sure that the musicians get paid for every song that is being played on this service. Currently, Tunerec is being monetized through adverting but they are planning to introduce a paid version which will come without advertising.

StumbleAudio is a StumbleUpon for indie music. A nice and pretty website to listen and discover cool indie music. It is exclusively for indie music and has over 2 million songs (from more than 120.000 artists) in its database.

The ideas behind StumbleAudio is to help listeners find the indie music they are likely to enjoy. Listeners are first asked to name one of their favorite artists or bands. Then it creates a new indie radio station comprising of similar indie artists.

There is good chance that everything you hear here will be new to you. So if you’re tired of hearing the same songs over and over again then give it a try.

To further tune your radio stations vote on the playing songs using ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ options. There is also a “Stumble” option which takes you to the next song. There are no limitations on that, skip as many songs as you want.

Another really great feature is the option to play an artist’s entire album. Clicking on the arrows on the album cover art will take you to the next song in the album.
