Facebook has become so popular and big enough to attract the wrath of malicious hackers and their viruses. Suddenly, there is a lot of incentive for hackers to infect Facebook profiles with malware links. For this specific problem, Face Infected is a great first step. This Facebook-based app scans your FB profile for malicious links and lets you delete them to help contain the online viruses.

Using this app is pretty straightforward as you only need your Facebook account to sign-up. Once in, you can click to scan your status/wall post, private messages, or links. The tool will then go over all your posts and look for traces of malicious links. Face Infected will then let you know the specific link that has a possible malware, and you can delete them directly from the website.

Facebook Infected gives us the luxury of looking through all our posts to find inconsistencies with our profile. This will effectively stop you from automatically sharing malicious links to your friend while at the same time helping Facebook to be free of viruses.

This app is a great initial step for acknowledging that viruses do exist online and can even hurt your accounts and profiles.

Features:

Scan and see if your Facebook is infected.

Eliminate viruses in Facebook.

Scans wall posts, messages, and links.

Login with Facebook info.

Scans for traces of malware-like links.

You want to socialize with your friends but you don’t want the whole world to see what you are up to. YapTime is a privacy-focused alternative to Facebook for small groups. Once you create a social space for your group and invite members, you can post messages to your groups, share photos and videos, and let your friends post comments on them.

You can also plan events using the group calendar, invite members and create more rooms for free. The interface is very simple and very user-friendly. The number of features is limited which is both good and bad as it gives you a clutter-free tool but lacks many features you are used to seeing on networks like Facebook.

Private social network for close friends.

Create a social space for your group.

Post messages and share photos, videos.

Plan events using group calendar.

Signup/signin with Twitter/Facebook account.

uProtect.it is an application for Facebook that aims to make your Facebook comments and photos more secure in a number of ways. First, it hides your comments and status updates from Facebook itself. How does it do that? Simple, it encrypts them. So you have full control over who can see your comments. The same can be achieved with your photos, each of which has a public URL on Facebook. You can also set expiration date for messages, and change permissions.

The main problem here is that it seems a bit too far fetched for a public platform like Facebook. Your comments don’t even appear normally. There will be a message from uProtect.it with a link to the encrypted comment which only people you allow can see. Only for the privacy paranoid I guess.

Features

Extra layer of protection for your Facebook comments and photos.

Set expiration dates for messages.

Change permission settings.

Comments are encrypted.

Tracking browser cookies to serve adverts that are tailored to the user’s likes and dislikes is a practice that has been going on for years. But these methods prompt privacy concerns time and again. Google has now come up with a Chrome extension called Keep My Opt-Outs that lets users permanently opt out of personalized ads and prevent the ad agencies from tracking your browser cookies. It is currently only available for Chrome, and works only for the ad programs that offer an opt-out option.

A thing to keep in mind here is that if you use this extension, ads around the web could get repetitive and monotonous. It could also result in a decline in profits for the sites you visit because their site would be no longer serving the best ads to you.

Features

Opt out of Google personalized advertising.

Works for the ads that offer an opt-out functionality.

Extension for other browsers coming soon.

If you want to access sites like MySpace or YouTube anonymously, or if you are on a restricted connection, then using a proxy server is one of the workarounds you could try. YouTube Proxy is a site which lets you access popular social sites like YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, Bebo as well as email services like Hotmail and Gmail through direct links via a proxy connection. There are options to encrypt URLs, use SSL, kill scripts, kill HTML and more to help you get the best experience on a restricted network.

The site doesn’t require registration and you could type a URL or click one of the links at the top to visit your favorite webpage. It also claims that you won’t find any intrusive pop-up ads which most such sites are notorious for.

Email is probably the most ubiquitous messaging system today, but even our own e-mails get caught up in a flood of spam. Bullguard is a great anti spam software that allows you to filter out spam and manage your inbox for you. Unlike tools that merely put up a wall around your inbox, Bullguard works outside that wall and proactively looks for spam by setting up a collaborative filter from the Bullguard community.

Once you have installed Bullguard Spam Filter, setting up your e-mail client to work with Bullguard is a snap. The software works with Outlook and Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird, and Windows Live Mail. Once your email accounts and clients are configured, direct Bullguard to scan your account and mark potential spam messages. You can also block specific emails and mark them as spam to help improve the collaborative filter. You can also unblock wrongly marked messages to let the Bullguard filter know of false positives.

Bullguard also allows you to set-up your personal email whitelists and blacklists. You can also automatically whitelist an email by replying to it. A simple status checker will let you know how clean your emails are and let you view relevant statistics.

Bullguard’s collaborative filter also does more than block spam – the more users that use the software, the more effective the filter is against phishing, virus-spreading emails, and foreign language spam.

Features:

Free download.

Filters spam going to your email.

Works with Outlook, Thunderbird and Windows Live.

Fast and lightweight.

Uses collaborative filter to increase spam detection.

Whitelist and blacklist emails.

Filtering system becomes more effective as time goes on.

You might have photographs on your cellphone that you want to keep private. Normally if somebody gets access to your phone and can view the photographs section, chances are that he can view all photographs stored on your phone. But Android phone owners can take advantage of “Gallery Private” and restrict access to some photos on their phone.

Gallery Private is a free and highly useful Android app that will help hide photos on your smartphone. After installing the app on your phone, you use it to specify which photographs you want to hide and set a password to view the photos. The selected photos are then encrypted by the app and remain encrypted even if the phone’s memory card is removed.

If the phone’s user tries to access the photos, he will need to enter the password you set earlier. If he enters a wrong password, instead of a “wrong password” message he gets redirected to a game; this leaves the impression that there were no hidden photographs in the first place.

Features:

Hide images on android

Safeguards your privacy when it comes to photographs on your smartphone.

Lets you choose the photos you want to encrypt.

Photos remain encrypted even if the memory device is removed from the phone.

Photos are viewable only after the right password has been entered.

A wrong password initiates a game, never revealing that there were restricted photographs on the phone.

YouTube is the most popular online video sharing network but it does not offer the privacy many of us would prefer. In order to better control who gets to see your videos, log on to VidMe.

VidMe is a private and secure video sharing website. The site’s controls are quite standard. You sign up for an account and then upload videos from your computers. The difference between YouTube and VidMe is that videos shared using VidMe work only for the intended recipient and cannot be forwarded, downloaded, or made viral without the video owner’s approval.

Each video has piracy controls which let you control and see which videos are being shared with whom. If a sharing-recipient, forwards your video’s URL to somebody else, it does not work; again, only the recipient can view the video. VidMe even has an iPhone app that lets you share videos directly from your phone.

Features:

Share videos securely and privately.

Controls are user friendly.

You can simply upload videos from your computer.

iPhone app also available.

An impressive number of video format files can be uploaded.

You can specify the people whom you want to share the video with.

Recipients can only view your videos, not download them.

If they forward your video’s URL to somebody else, it will not work.
