Em is a unit of measurement in Typography and defines the proportion of a given letter’s width and height. For example, if it is in a particular font, the height of the letter is 11 pixels and the width is 17 pixels, so it would have an em of 11/17. However, who has the time to constantly do mathematical calculations? EmChart is a simple reference tool that converts pixels into Em for you and vice versa within seconds.

It is a great tool for web designers and typography artists who are often perplexed between using both em and pixels and want a quick way to convert one to the other. The tool doesn’t require any download and can also be printed for easier reference.

Adding to this list of online tools is Brickify, a free image to pixel art converter that turns your images into pixelated image made of tiny 3d boxes (bricks). Your image needs to be stored online as the site only accepts URLs of images. When the image transformation is complete you can download the Brickified image in PNG format.

As you can see from the color options under the transformed image, we have the option to change the color of any brick we want. By zooming into the image we can better control the brick coloring.

One websites that offers such a tool is Piq. The site is a web tool that offers a number of useful features that assist in making pixe art pieces.

The drawing above was made using the symmetry tools. When you are done creating your piece, you can either upload to the site and obtain a URL or download it as a BMP image file.

Ask any graphics designer (or a gaming enthusiast) about the differences between various computer monitors and their color settings and you’ll probably get a long lecture about how important it is to get all those myriad settings just perfect. What, to us normal users, looks like esoteric (and probably meaningless) settings can actually make a whole lot of difference to the way those images look on the screen.

But how do you get those settings right? While there are a number of desktop based tools (and Windows 7 comes with one), ScreenPerfect is one of the few web based tools I’ve found for this purpose.

A well-calibrated monitor is extremely important for professions that handle graphics and pictures (i.e. photographers, web and graphic designers, video editors) since they need to view their material in the best color representation possible. In addition, if you are a media freak, you will definitely want a well-tuned monitor.

Photo Friday’s Monitor Calibration Tool is a webpage that guides you on how to properly calibrate your monitor online. Although it won’t tweak the monitor settings for you, it will certainly help you decide if your monitor is at its optimal viewing condition.

To calibrate your monitor with this tool, you need to dim the lights you are using and then set your browser to full screen mode. All you need to do is adjust the brightness and the contrast of your monitor until tones that are lighter than true black are clearly distinguishable from true black, and tones immediately darker than true white are distinguishable from true white. The webpage includes a palette of the grayscale tone, as well as some black and white graphics, to help you judge whether or not your monitor is already calibrated.

Features:

Helps you calibrate your monitor.

Set your monitor to the optimal viewing setting.

Make true black and true white clearly distinguishable from other shades of gray.

Free, no signup is required.

Stuck pixels can sometimes linger on your screen for a very long time unless they get fixed, and iPhones are not exempted from this problem. Fortunately, iPhone Pixel App helps you correct stuck pixels in your screen by using javascript to cycle colors at high frequency to stimulate the pixels.

To remove stuck pixels, navigate to the iPhone Pixel App website and go to the “Test For Stuck Pixels” section. Once you confirmed that you have stuck pixels, go to the “Repair iPhone LCD” section and let it run for a little while. It also helps if you apply light pressure on the glass near the affected area in your iPhone screen to help quicken the process.

Fixing stuck pixels could be futile since they rarely get fixed and you are probably better off having your iPhone replaced if under warranty. But if you can’t wait for a replacement, this is a great tool to try for your phone.
