There are many tools out there that use Optical Recognition Technology to parse text from images. Most of them require you to upload the files to their server and only supports limited formats. PicTranslator: Automatically Translates Text in Images

Although we primarily focus on free apps here at the directory, sometimes we mention nice paid tools too. PicTranslator is one such tool. It’s an iPhone app that helps to translate foreign language text in images clicked from the iPhone camera into English.

PicTranslator currently supports a wide range of languages like French, German, Italian, Spanish and many more. From $1.99 you can select one language to translate from and just $3.99 for all the languages. When you take a picture, the app lets you crop the image and point to the text you need to translate. It then translates it within 10 to 60 seconds depending on the length of text.

Free-ORC is web application that can recognize and extract text from image file such as scanned documents, photographs or digital camera captured pictures. Extracted text will be presented as plain text.
