If you’re in the habit of taking notes while you work on your computer, chances are you use Notepad, or some other note-taking programs that can save notes onto your hard drive. But what if the precious file with your notes in it gets deleted? You can imagine how drastic that loss can be.

One of the best solutions to this problem is to store important notes online. While such applications do exist, many tend to be too fancy and bandwidth-hogging. Note-taking is meant to help you, not slow you down. Today I came across basic note-taking online service SimpleText.ws

It is a web tool designed to store ‘human sized’ text i.e. text which you write as notes, and not as lengthy thesis papers. While the site is secure, the author suggests people not to store any sensitive information (such as credit card numbers) on the site – better safe than sorry.

To get started, create an account by clicking the ‘Sign In’ button on the homepage. If you have a Google account, you can use it to sign in. Here’s how the note panel looks like:

As you can see, the entire panel has a very simple text storage interface, much similar to Notepad. You can type your notes and not worry about losing them. Unlike manual syncing, SimpleText.ws merges your changes so you’ll never lose data.

Cloverr is a free web service that acts as an online hard drive for storing files from all over the internet. Instead of uploading files from your local hard drive it lets you save online files such as Flickr photos, YouTube videos, Google Maps… etc.

Ibrii is a new site using which you can create notes by clipping web pages. It lets you cut and paste things like videos, pictures, text or any other object from a site on the net and save it in your Ibrii account. Later you can directly view those notes and objects on Ibrii without the need to visit that site. You can also share your content with others using Facebook, Twitter, IMs and email.

How it works:

As you can see in the above screenshot, when you join ibrii, you get a bookmarklet called ” create note.” When you need to cut and save something from a site, select it, click on the bookmarklet and drag the selected item to the sidebar that appears and save it. Later on you can view it in your ibrii account.

What do people use ‘Sort My List’ for? Some use it for a very simple “online notepad,” since it allows users to load a file from hard drive, work on it, do search and replace, clean it up, and save it back to their hard drive. It’s much more than this, however.

‘Sort My List’ is an “Online List Sorting Tool”. What is that? Well, it means that you can alphabetize a list, of course, and a lot of people use it for that. But ‘Sort My List’ can do other sorts as well, and continues to add more as they are requested.

‘Sort My List’ can alphabetize, sort numerically, sort by item length, by day of the week, or by month. It can mirror each item on the list (Oprah -> harpO), and much more usefully, it can reverse the word order for each item (Fred Smith – Smith Fred).

Aside from the sorting aspect, users can reformat their data from “comma separated” to “every item on a new line” to “separated by spaces” to any other character or characters between their list items. Users can also convert their data to all lowercase or all uppercase. They can remove duplicate items, strip away extra whitespace, do a “search and replace,” and number their list with numbers or letters.

Webnote is a web-based note taking application to store and organize notes online. First you need to create a workspace. If you want to keep your notes private then you might want to come up with something long and hard to guess. Once the workspace is ready you can start adding notes.
