Whenever we are signed into our instant messaging client and are busy with some other program or task, we set our instant messaging status as “busy” to indicate that we should not be disturbed. Until now there was no equivalent feature for cellphone users. But “Don’t Text Me” changes that.

Don’t Text Me is a nifty application for iDevices (iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad) that, after getting a tap from you, sends your contacts a auto reply text messages telling them that you are busy
(driving, in a meeting, in class, or out for dinner) and should not be disturbed with text messages at the moment.

Users who are easily distracted by text messages (drivers in particular) will find this tool very helpful. You can also control whom not to send the “busy” message to by sending it to a group of contacts rather than our entire phonebook.

iPod and iPad users can use Don’t Text Me because it uses WiFi. Messages are to contacts in the U.S. only.

AppBrain: Android Apps Repository With No Spam

Google’s open source platform is certainly thriving, with 40,000 apps and counting. Trouble is, unlike Apple’s application store, the Android app marketplace is virtually unregulated. Because of this, some believe that 1/4 of Android apps to be little more than spam.

AppBrain aims to be the Android apps repository without the spam. All applications are reviewed to ensure quality, meaning you won’t have to wade through spam to find the good bits you’re looking for. AppBrain doesn’t store any applications on its own server; rather, it serves as an alternative interface to Google’s marketplace which you can use from your desktop computer.

Here’s how it works: you sign up for an AppBrain account, then install the AppBrain Market Sync application onto your Android phone. Now you can browse for Android apps on your phone, and click to install them. The Market Sync app on your phone will use the default Google Marketplace application to install your software, stopping to ask you to pay if necessary.

The service is free, and currently only works with applications that work in the United States (support for other countries is reportedly coming).

Sometimes you may need to point out to someone where exactly you are on the world using a map. You can probably send him/her your coordinates or you can simply use Wizi, a Google Maps mashup that lets you instantly share where you are on the map to another person via SMS, email, or Twitter.

After signing up for an account, search for a location and drag your avatar to pinpoint where you are. Once you are set, the app will interpret where you are exactly and send your location to your friends. You can post your location as tweets, send it as e-mail, or send as SMS.

You can download Wizi as a mobile app so you can share your live location instantly and know where your friends are. This can be particularly useful if you want to tell a friend where you are going to meet and find the best route to go there.

Google Goggles: Conduct a Google Search Using Pictures (Android Phone)

Google Goggles is a new app for Android phones that lets you do a Google search using pictures taken from your mobile phone. The app integrates with the cellphone camera and lets you take pictures of books & DVDs, landmarks, logos, contact info, artwork, businesses, products, barcodes, or text and then conduct a visual search. You can also turn on ‘visual search history’ that enables you to view the photos you took and lets you share them with friends.

The app has been currently released under Google Labs and hence is far from perfect. However, Google promises that it will evolve into a better tool that’d enable Android phone users to click just about anything using their cellphones and get accurate information. It certainly would be a huge time saver for Android users .
