Fullwiki: Wikipedia and Google Maps Combined

Your standard Wikipedia article mentions a lot of places. Google Maps knows where they all are. Fullwiki aims to utilize Wikipedia’s textual content in a new way, it combines Wikipedia and Google Maps so that the precise location of anything mentioned is only a click away. For example, if a city is mentioned in an article, that city is given a link; click that link and you’re taken to its Google Map result.

The aim here is to supplement the textual information in Wikipedia with helpful maps; the result is often is a mess. Several articles on Wikipedia contain references to hundreds of locations, meaning the map you see is a world map so crowded with locations as to be useless.

Still, Fullwiki represents a new way to check out Wikipedia articles, and is a great supplement if you want a better geographic understanding of a particular article.

Casper is a cool live flight tracker based on Google Maps that lets you track flights in real time. You can see actual planes coming in and out of airports color-coded by airlines. Hovering your mouse over any plane provides you with additional details such as departure airport, arrival airport, flight number, current altitude and speed.

You can also select a different map type such as satellite, terrain or hybrid and color the planes based on altitude and flight type. If there is no flight activity, you can also select a past date and time to replay activity from that time. Clicking on a plane also provides you details about the airline and a picture of the type of plane.

Right now Casper is a demo tool that only shows activity for the Amsterdam airport, but the software can be configured to any other location if the data is available.

Here is another interesting Google Maps Mashup that lets you visually compare countries, lakes and landmarks one to another on the map. It allows you to outline any part of the world and easily compare its size with any other place on the planet. For example you can outline state of Alabama and then compare it with other states.

To see how it looks, see example comparisons: Iraq to Texas, Golden Gate Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge, Tiananmen Square to Red Square.

To compare places simply click on the reference Map and draw an outline of the place. As you draw your outline on the reference map it also appears on comparison map where you can drag and zoom to anywhere in the world. The outline keeps the same real-world size as in the top map, so it may become very large or very tiny in the bottom map.

You can also generate a permanent URL that points to a particular comparison and share it with others.

TimeTube is a cool mashup that maps Youtube videos on a time line. It adds that one useful feature that Youtube doesnt’ have. When you search for something on TimeTube it arranges results by date and puts them on a time line, making it easy to browse certain events in the same order they have occured.

For instance, if you search for Obama, you’ll get all Obama ralated videos mapped on a time line. Similarly, you can search for any recent scandal and you’ll get the whole picture. Quite handy. Simple web map mashup for locating mid points beween two locations. In case you want to meet with someone and need to find a convenient midpoint this is the app you need. Just enter yours and the location of the person you want to meet with and it will give you a number of midpoints along with nearby food joints. You can also narrow search criteria down and get only the locations that match your food preferences (Pizzeria, Chinese Food, Ice cream, Indian etc.)

Another similar service is HappyMedian. The only difference is that HappyMedian can find midpoints for up to 4 locations.

Feature Overview

Visually search for products / images / videos on popular services like Amazon, Ebay, YouTube or Flickr.
Search using ‘website (Youtube, Flickr, Ebay, …) + category + keyword’ combination (ex. Youtube->Comedy->funny cats).
Visually appealing drag’n drop interface: move search results, resize results, rearrange, hover to preview, change background color, etc.
Hover over the image to get a larger preview of the item (ex. some eBay item). Click on the image to get all item-related info (ex eBay item description).
Switch between different display modes: Grid, Stack, Pile list, and Graph.
Save Images: To store images just Drag them to “My Folder” tab located at the bottom of the screen.
