National Broadband Map is a US government initiative to let people learn and track how good broadband coverage is in a particular area. To start with, just enter the address of a location and the tool will display a complete list of broadband providers that offer service in your area along with their maximum advertised speed.

People who used the Internet in the 1990s know that internet connections have come a long way. NetworkMaps is an interactive map by the BBC that helps understand that by showing the growth of network cables and internet usage from 1998 to 2010. The map shows the percentage of people using the internet for each country for a particular year along with the estimated number of internet users.

The map can also be played like a slideshow, displaying the expansion of the Internet in the world year after year from 1998 to 2010. Straight yellow lines between continents represent submarine cables that are today a backbone of major Internet networks and how they have grown over the years. You can also choose to hide the number of people or submarine cables or both from the map.

20 Things I Learned About Browsers and the Web is the name of a new book that was recently released by the Google Chrome team. It’s an online book (not exactly an ebook though) and built using HTML5 with illustrations by Christoph Niemann. It’s a newbies guide to the internet, how it works, how browsers and web apps work, privacy and security on the web and many other such concepts. A nice site to share with non-geeky friends and family members.

As you would expect with any Google product, the design of the book really stands out. The pages turn like they do in a real book, and there’s a cool bookmark tag too to help you mark a page for reading later.

Features

An online book by the Google Chrome team explaining browsers and the internet

Great design, makes reading fun

Built on HTML5, illustrations by Christoph Niemann
