Google Reader is receiving a lot of flak for some of the changes they have made as of late. This opens the door for a new competitor to step in and try to dethrone the almighty Google. Subpug is hoping to be your replacement. They offer a great feature set, and they are incredibly easy to use.

They especially cater to new RSS users, who aren’t following thousands of feeds already. They offer a bunch of pre-subscribed categories that make it easy to find what you are in to, and subscribe to some popular sites in that category. Best of all, you don’t need to sign up for any kind of account to start using their service. You simply go to their website, and start reading.

You can also import an OPML file to add all the feeds you read on another reader. The layout is very clean is visually pleasing. If you are sick of your current reader, Subpug is a great option that is worth checking out. If you are new to readers, their categories make it easy to get started.

Features:

Pre-subscribed categories make it easy for new RSS users to find feeds.

Clean layout makes it easy to read your feeds.

No sign up required to use their service.

Import OPML file of the feeds you already read.

If you’re looking for a pretty RSS reader or a news reading app in the ilk of Flipboard, then you’d be hard pressed to find anything better than Pulse. This app for iOS and Android is a newsreader on steroids that can transform any website or blog into a colorful, tiled tapestry.

With Pulse, you will immediately notice how the tiled layout allows the app to show a higher information density. Once all of your web sources are added you can just swipe up to see your news sources roll, and then swipe left or right to look for news stories within the source. This allows you to see up to 18 stories at once on your iPad compared to 3-4 stories using a similar app.

Pulse also lets you categorize your sources into tabs that you can access on the top of the tiled layout. You can “star” stories to read later, send it to Instagram, and share articles through email, Twitter, and Facebook.

Pulse is a worthy default newsreader for your iOS or Android device. While it does not have the magazine-like experience of other apps, Pulse allows you to zoom in on news from your sources in an instant.

Features:

Newsreader app for the iOS and Android using tiled layout.

Save for reading later or send to Instagram.

Share news items through Facebook or Twitter.

Add your own website or RSS reader account.

You can easily add your RSS feeds to Google Reader and stay updated with your favorite websites. But for many people, the interface of Google Reader is too basic. For them, a better alternative to Google Reader’s native web interface would be the visually appealing desktop Reader client, WebReader.

WebReader is a desktop client for Google Reader. It is cross-platform since it is based on Adobe AIR. The setup file is sized at 1.4MB and the program installs very quickly. You provide the application with your Google account username and password for it to fetch your subscriptions from Google Reader. Later you can add feeds from within the client. Your feeds are clearly categorized in the left pane with the article being displayed in the right pane. You can further categorize the feeds and articles through different folders. You can quickly search the articles using the search bar located in the top left. New items in the feed are quickly followed by a desktop notification. Three different views are available for articles: details, summaries, and titles.

The font size of articles can be easily adjusted. Any article you like can be directly emailed, tweeted, or shared on Facebook from within the application.

From the images above you can see that WebReader’s interface is a lot more appealing than the native web interface of Google Reader. Once you make the switch, you will never again log onto Google Reader in your web browser.

Features:

Google reader desktop client.

Based on Adobe AIR hence cross-platform.

Lets you view articles in detail, as summaries, or only as titles.

Organizes feeds and folders.

Pops a desktop notifications when new items in the feed appear.

Lets you control font size.

NewsBlur is a free online feed reader software app. It lets you subscribe to a maximum of 64 feeds; the premium account allows unlimited subscriptions. You can either create a new account or import feeds from your Google Reader account. NewsBlur is extremely feature-rich: it supports keyboard shortcuts, tags, and displays the articles in their original websites. The app also has a built-in “Intelligence Trainer” that monitors the type of articles you read; it then hides stories you would not want to read and highlights the ones you would like.

The interface is neat and easy to navigate. Sites and their number of articles are displayed in the left pane. Articles themselves are displayed in the center and a list of them can be found at the bottom.

If you are someone who loves scouring through Twitter stream primarily for checking the different links people share, then RSS like reader Litefeed is made for you. I’m sure you would agree that clicking through the links to new browser tabs each time isn’t fun and it consumes time too. Litefeed expands all these links, be it a blog post, a video or an image, right inside your Litefeed dashboard. So no switching back and forth from Twitter to a different site.

Litefeed needs you to authorize it to access your Twitter account (it uses OAuth, so no security worries). Once you do that, you can log into your Litefeed and check your expanded Twitter stream there. It supports popular services like YouTube, Vimeo, Yfrog, Ow.ly, Foursquare and more.

Features:

RSS like reader for Twitter stream

Get all the content in your Twitter stream expanded and shown on one page.

Supports popular services like YouTube and YFrog.

Saves time and makes you more productive.

RSS readers do a great job of summarizing articles and posts so we can skim through them. However, not all of us like the congested reading experience and layout that most RSS readers offer. Prldr is a web-based RSS reader that retains the original layout of your feeds.

Prldr divides the screen into two parts where the left sidebar serves as an easy to use navigation panel and the expanded right side displays the complete feed in its original layout. Each feed source gets a unique color so articles from the same source are easy to recognize.

You can quickly browse through your feeds by clicking the next button or jump to a specific page by using the page numbers provided at the bottom. Prldr lets you import feeds from an OPML file or add a new feed by simply entering the URL.

An online rss feed reader for better reading experience.

Displays complete feeds in their original format.

Add feeds via URL or an OPML file.

No registration required.

While other feed readers (like Google Reader) present a stripped-down view of each article, Feed Looks shows you each feed entry in all its visual glory. By adding feeds to Feed Looks you can have an overall view of all the new entries in your subscribed feeds.

When you click on an entry, it quickly opens up in its original form, under a pane of Feed Looks. This pane is your control panel from where you can shift between feed entries and go back to your feeds dashboard.

I found the site’s controls to be very user friendly. You can easily add new feeds through the “+” button and use the “Home” menu to very quickly get back to your dashboard. But like I mentioned before, the key feature of this feeds reader is to show you each feed entry in its original form.

Features:

User friendly controls.

Each feed can be seen in its original form.

The response time of the site is very impressive.

You can pin / unpin items for later reading.
