Radioactivity Counter is a new application for Android devices. The function of the app is to help you measure radiation in your surroundings. Interestingly, the app makes use of your smartphone’s camera.

If you cover the camera with black tape, then the radiation in your surroundings will be registered as specs of white light in the CMOS sensors in the camera that come equipped on the phone. Through this method you can primarily measure gamma radiations and a few higher order beta radiations.

Earthquake Notification Service (ENS) is a free to use web service that notifies its users via email of whenever there is an earthquake in their region. All you have to do to get started is sign up for an account on the site. After signing up, you can indicate the region for which you would like to receive earthquake updates. You can simply choose a few regions by clicking on them from a list or you can draw a custom region on the world map, as in the image above. Earthquake updates for your selected region will be emailed to you whenever they are available. These updates include the exact location, magnitude, and depth of the earthquake.

Flood Map is a free to use web app that helps determine which areas will be underwater once a flood strikes. The app works in a very simple manner. It lets you specify the elevation of the flood water levels and then it matches it with the elevation of terrains in various areas. A map of your location, judged by your IP address, is loaded up automatically but you can change the map to another location if you want.

Then simply enter a water height level in meters and watch the map change its colors; regions covered in blue will have a land elevation level less than the water level you specified. A direct link for your map will also be generated which simplifies sharing the results.

Using the application is really simple and straightforward. All you have to do is launch the application and according to instructions, put an opaque adhesive on the Facetime camera. This will prevent any light from conventional sources from being captured. After that, the iPhone will record measurements itself, which can be shared with other people.

However, you should not rely completely on your iPhone to detect any radiation in the environment, as it is not a tool designed to accurately measure radioactivity levels, only a general guide.

The application is only compatible with iPhone 4/4S and is available in iTunes App Store for €0.79.
