Crackle is a video entertainment website from Sony Pictures Entertainment Company. It works like the Sony’s version of Hulu where you can watch free full length movies, TV shows and original web series straight from your browser. The large library of videos also includes popular films, “minisodes”, and many cartoons.

Crackles offers content in variety of genres like comedy, action, music, sci-fi, and reality. You won’t get much of the latest movie releases from Sony, but you can easily watch older films such as Godzilla, Ghostbusters, and the Next Karate Kid. If you are a fan of classic TV, you can watch decades’ worth of shows such as I Dream of Jeannie, Party of Five, and Astroboy.

Crackle content can be watched across multi-platform media destinations like Sling Media Player, Boxxee, Veoh, Youtube, Hulu, Metacafe, and many more. Unfortunately Crackle videos are limited to U.S. audience only.

NFB, which is the National Film Board of Canada, has introduced a nice free iPhone/iPod Touch app called NFB Films which brings more than 1000 documentaries, short films, animated movies and more to your iPhone/iPod touch.

The films are streamed over the internet but if you usually aren’t in a Wi-Fi zone then you could also download up to 24 hours of films to your device so that you can watch them when you are bored. They have a diverse range of titles and you could do a search on their site for clips by genre, language, title or the decade. It also includes some Oscar nominated flicks.

SnagFilms is another awesome web resource for watching documentaries online. It has a huge free library of documentaries that can be watched online.

In the past we profiled a number of other documentary sites including 911docs, DocumentaryHeaven, TopDocumentaryFilms, MoviesFoundOnline, Bodocus and FreeDocumentaries. What makes SnagFilms different from all those websites is that it doesn’t aggregate films from around the web but hosts them on its own server and serves content in high quality video player.

You can search for documentaries, navigate by topics, popularity or browse by title A-Z. With so many documentaries in its database you are bound to find films that resonate with your interests. Among other things there is also an option to embed films onto your blog or personal webpage.

VBS is a free broadcast network that streams original video content on the Internet 24/7. It doesn’t aggregate videos from other sources but actually employs its own journalists from international bureaus in 20 countries to produce the materials for its shows (video series) which cover domestic and international news, culture and music.

Each of its shows consists of several episodes and is accompanied by a detailed description of the series. For instance, the show below, called “Inside Afghanistan with Ben Anderson” consists of 8 separate video episodes covering situation in Afghanistan after the US-led invasion. There are plenty of other interesting documentaries on VBS that you can watch online.
