An open approach to the web and content publishing in general involves a standard system of attribution. If you get image and content that are both under Creative Commons, then it is a must to properly cite them. However, some people find it difficult to do this properly because most license information is confusing and hard to find. Open Attribute is a nifty browser add-on that solves this problem by finding and formatting license information in one click.

You can install the OpenAttribute to Firefox and Chrome. Once installed, the tool sits on your navigation bar where you can click on it to copy the information from the website. You can choose to copy HTML or plain text attribution. Then just paste the information to your blog post or website.

CopyGator is an online service that can monitor your blog RSS feed and notify you if someone bluntly stealing blog content from you. The service will provide you with an overview page where you can see how, when, where your content is being used.

Each found copy will have a clear side note (i.e. bears a slight resemblance, share many similar elements or is an exact copy) that tells you degree of resemblance to your post.

There are two ways you can use CopyGator.

CopyrightSpot is a website that lets you search the web and find sites that are reusing your original content with or without your permission. Enter the address of the blog, webpage or even an RSS feed, click “Search” and wait for CopyrightSpot to crawl the web for duplicates.

Once it’s finished scanning the web it will present you with a list of the websites that have copied your content. You can further clock on the individual result to see the copied text. Quite handy.

YouTomb : See What Videos were Deleted from YouTube

Wondering what videos were removed from YouTube due to copyright reasons ? Youtomb is the place to find it out. Youtomb is an interesting project from MIT folks that scans growing database of YouTube videos and finds videos that were removed by the user or taken down by Youtube staff. Although you won’t be able to watch those videos, you can see why and when they were taken down, and who requested the take down.

YouTomb is currently monitoring 223688 videos, and has identified over 4400 videos that were taken down for alleged copyright violation. Furthermore it found more than 13000 videos that were taken down for other reasons.
