An online address book is a must-have for everybody. Having an easily accessible place where you can quickly obtain contact information can be very helpful in case of emergencies and urgent matters. But when your contacts begin changing their email address or phone numbers, keeping an up-to-date address book becomes difficult. To solve this issue, eGroovy Contacts was created.

eGroovy Contacts is a free to use web service that lets you create an online address book. Contacts are added to your address book via ‘cards’. All users on the site, including yourself, get a virtual card that has your contact information on them. Your address book is a collection of your contacts’ cards. When you invite them to use the web service, all they have to do is update their card when they change their information; the address book of anybody who has added them as a contact will then be updated.

Contacts can be added manually or you can simply import them from your Google or Hotmail accounts. Imported information can be edited anytime.

Multi Edit: An Easy to Use Phonebook Manager [iPhone]

If you have a moderate number of contact book entries, at times, you might find it difficult to edit entries or send messages to multiple people at once. Multi-Edit is an app made specifically for that purpose – to make changes to your iPhone phonebook easier.

The app not only allows you to edit multiple entries at the same time, but also allows you to send text messages or emails to a group in one go. You may also wish to add specific contacts into a group, such as all your friends in a “Friends Group” and your “Work Friends” in another.

All a user has to do is select the multiple entries they wish to edit and click the “Edit” button found at the bottom of the screen. Any change made then will affect all of the entries selected.

Furthermore, to send text messages to a group, just select the contacts and click the “options” button, which will allow you to send SMS to a group of people.

Update: The app is no longer free. It costs $0.99 now.

Writethat.Name: Keeps Your Google Contacts Updated

Writethat.name is an interesting service that aims to keep your Google/Gmail contacts in order by updating them with new address book information such as phone numbers or mailing addresses for existing contacts. It automatically extracts the email signature of senders and then runs them against existing contacts. If a change is needed, it updates the corresponding contact accordingly.

If you select auto-update, everything is done behind the scenes. Otherwise, it will send an email report at the end of the day for you to review. Once reviewed, you can hit the “Check” button and it’ll then update the information.

The service uses OAuth and OpenID to connect to your Google account and never deletes any of your data. It is currently free while in beta, and expects to charge $3 per month or $20 per year after the beta period.

Scrubly: A Nifty Tool To Remove Duplicate Contacts From Gmail, Outlook & Mac Address Books

Having duplicate contacts in your address book can be rather inconvenient for people who prefer organization in everything. Individually looking for duplicate contacts and then removing them can be quite a tedious task. Here to automate the process is a web tool called Scrubly.

Scrubly is a free to use web service that looks for duplicate contacts in your Gmail, Outlook, and Mac address books. You start by signing up for an account and then importing your address book. For Gmail, the site works via simply linking to your Google account whereas for Outlook and Mac you first need to download the respective desktop client. After your original address book is backed up, duplicates from the book are found and removed.

You can do an additional removal that detects contacts that are only loosely matching – this can be helpful when you have saved the same contact with different spellings. The free account of Scrubly allows up to a maximum of 250 contacts and unlimited ‘scrubs’ or removals.

Gmail comes with contact management and fairly basic contact management. If you want instant searching of your contact list, that lists recent conversations with the given contact, MailBrowser might be for you. This program indexes your contacts on your hard drive for instant browsing – whether you’re online or off.

Another feature is instant searching of your Gmail attachments, meaning you can find the file you’re looking for quickly and easily. A part of the process downloads all your attachments to your computer’s hard drive, meaning desktop-search programs such as Google Desktop can index and locate them for you, something they couldn’t do before.

MailBrowser plugs into your browser as a sidebar, to the right of your Gmail window or tab. The sidebar can be closed when you’re not doing email-related things and re-opened with the click of a button. The program is not installed as a browser plugin, however; it comes as an installable program for Windows and Mac (sorry Linux users.) Gist is a brilliant web based email and social network contacts manager which entered into public beta recently. In fact, it could be better called a relationship manager. After you sign up for their web based service and provide them your email and social accounts (like Twitter, LinkedIn etc) information, it checks your contacts and creates a dashboard where you can see comprehensive details about each of them.

It can tell you who are your most important contacts, their web presence, the tweets, blogs and articles mentioning them and much more.

It also offers an Outlook plugin which can neatly integrate with your Outlook mail. Plus it can leverage your Salesforce contacts too.

This web based service could certainly prove to be an useful one for people and businesses who want to prioritize their email by contacts and network with them in a better way.
