Getting junk mail in your email inbox is inconvenient. But getting printed junk mail through your door is downright frustrating. If you are moving to a new place and do not want your junk snail mail to follow you, then Updater is just the service you need to check out.

Updater is a service that lets you fill out an official change-of-address form online. By filling out this form you update your address and also update businesses, schools, organizations, and personal contacts. You can also control who exactly has access to your physical address. In other words, you can create your own snail mail blacklist and ban letters from certain marketers and companies.

-The following sentence is a bit misleading: “By filling out this form you update your address and also update businesses, schools, organizations, and personal contacts.” Actually, by filling out the postal change of address form, you merely request mail forwarding from the postal service, but you still have to update all the businesses, schools, organizations and contacts that you value. That’s where Updater comes in. With Updater, a user can create an “Update List” (of all their valued mailers and affiliations), and Updater will then update all such affiliations so that the user does not need to waste time reaching out to each separately. Similarly, an Updater user can create his or her own “Do Not Mail List” and Updater will then request that each listed mailer remove the user’s info from their mailing lists. The result is that our users gain precision control over the privacy and communication settings for their postal address.

There are many ways to convert data into intelligent information and if the data you have is a location based data, OpenHeatMap is a great way to do that. OpenHeatMap is a simple tool that takes your Excel, CSV file or Google Docs spreadsheet with Geo data and creates a heat map out of it.

The maps are then automatically uploaded to the gallery along with lots of other maps. The tool functions well with both Flash and HTML5 and lets you share them easily via email, Facebook or Twitter. You can also use the tool to search Twitter and visualize the results on a map. The tool still isn’t perfect but once it grows, the amount of information will be phenomenal.

BatchGeo: Automatically Maps Spreadsheet Address Data

If you want your website to have a map of some geographical locations pointed out, chances are you will head on over to Google Maps. You will find a map there for each location then go through the painstaking process of merging the individual maps. With BatchGeo, none of that needs to be done.

BatchGeo is a free web service that takes a number of location addresses as inputs, then generates a map with those locations already pinpointed. The data which users enter is similar to a spreadsheet format, having rows and columns.

After pasting locations from the spreadsheet all you have to do is hit the ‘Map Now‘ button and everything else is automated.

Xm.my is a simple web tool that lets you create short map links for any location on Google Maps and easily share them online (Twitter, Facebook, Delicious… etc.)

CrimeReports, as the name suggests, lets you view crime reports by zip code, city or a particular neighborhood. Currently limited to North America, this tool gets its data from various law enforcement agencies. It shows crimes like robbery, theft, homicide, assault etc by default through symbols/flags of various colors on the map. Click on a symbol and you get the corresponding crime information on the left.

It provides options to view other crime details like kidnapping, arson etc and also lets you sort by type of crime, date or distance. Plus view crime information within specific dates.

Bookmaplet is an address mapping bookmarlet for your browser. It allows you quickly view a map of any physical address you come across online without having to leave the page you are on.

It’s pretty simple. First, drag the bookmarklet onto your browser toolbar. When you see an address on a web page simply highlight it with your mouse and click on the Bookmaplet. A small pop-up frame will appear in the top right corner of the screen displaying the location of the address on a map.

ZipMaps: Find Out Zip Code For Any Place in the US

ZipMaps is a Google Map mashup application which helps you find out zip code for any place in US. It presents a map and a custom tile layer of zip codes over it.

You can either search by location (address, city, town etc) or zoom into map and search visually. The application also displays state links on the sidebar that can be used to zoom to the chosen place. When clicked they replaced by counties which in turn, load links to cities and towns in those counties.
