eGroovy Contacts is a free to use web service that lets you create an online address book. Contacts are added to your address book via ‘cards’.  All users on the site, including yourself, get a virtual card that has your contact information on them. Your address book is a collection of your contacts’ cards. When you invite them to use the web service, all they have to do is update their card when they change their information; the address book of anybody who has added them as a contact will then be updated.

Contacts can be added manually or you can simply import them from your Google or Hotmail accounts. Imported information can be edited anytime.

If you select auto-update, everything is done behind the scenes. Otherwise, it will send an email report at the end of the day for you to review. Once reviewed, you can hit the “Check” button and it’ll then update the information.

The service uses OAuth and OpenID to connect to your Google account and never deletes any of your data. It is currently free while in beta, and expects to charge $3 per month or $20 per year after the beta period.

Scrubly is a free to use web service that looks for duplicate contacts in your Gmail, Outlook, and Mac address books. You start by signing up for an account and then importing your address book. For Gmail, the site works via simply linking to your Google account whereas for Outlook and Mac you first need to download the respective desktop client. After your original address book is backed up, duplicates from the book are found and removed.

You can do an additional removal that detects contacts that are only loosely matching – this can be helpful when you have saved the same contact with different spellings. The free account of Scrubly allows up to a maximum of 250 contacts and unlimited ‘scrubs’ or removals.

Syncfriend is a free web service that helps you back up the contacts of your smartphone. Through a simple series of steps outlined on the site, Syncfriend helps you set up automatic synchronization from your phone to your Syncfriend account.

The phones and OS’s supported by the service include iPhone, Android, Nokia, HTC, Sony Ericsson, BlackBerry, Palm, Motorola, Samsung, and LG. The synchronization works both ways; you can add contacts to your Syncfriend account manually as well and later have them synchronized to your phone.

In addition to contacts synchronization, the site also supports syncing your calendars across Outlook and your phones.

There are two ways to run a search:

1. Phone number look up – search for phone number by name or address.

2. Revers phone look up – search for name and address by phone number.

I have done few searches and the results were worryingly accurate (How the heck they know all of that?). In both cases the results show owner’s name, address, phone number and the occupation.

You can also register on the site, create your own listing and use it as your online profile. This way you have some level of control on what others see.
