Sometimes people pirate software simply because they want to get a “full-version feel of the software before they make a purchasing decision. I use serals and keygens to find out what’s worth buying, for example, because sometimes demo versions just plain suck. They are unnecessarily crippled sometimes. I personally support the Microsoft model in this case where for example they’ll give you a certain key for 60 day of uncrippled use of the software. After that, whoever can afford to, and knows little about computers, and believes the hype that someone is watching everything you do, will get the software legally. The people who can’t afford it will either get a free alternative, or use a pirated version. In any case, the use of the pirated version is the lesser evil for microsoft because while they do not get money (which matters little, since they weren’t going to get it anyways), at least it will not cause them to lose “market share”. If the user chooses the pirated version, he still broadens the MS user base, which is also beneficial to the software suite.

I own XP Home, and XP Pro. I have the serial numbers, but lost the CD’s. I got a copy of the CD for the pro and MY LEGAL serial number DID NOT work. Until MS comes up with a user friendly way of assisting PAYING customers, people will need sites such as these. Since Vista is out now and there are issues, I do not want to buy XP again-being I paid for two versions already, and Vista is the current OS. I am afraid I may not meet the system requirements for Vista and don’t have the cash to rebuild my system for a new OS.

Guys, get real here and get off your high horse. This is the real world. People pirate software and grab serial numbers all the time. Make Use Of is not saying it’s right and we certainly don’t condone it, not for one minute. But do you really think that people looking for this site would not have found it if we hadn’t included it in our directory? Of course they would still have found it! There’s things called SEARCH ENGINES!

Our goal is to build a comprehensive impartial directory where we don’t pass judgment on the content of the site. What people then do with these sites is up to them. If they want to use these serial numbers to break the law, well, that is up to them and their conscience. We can’t and won’t intervene.

Make Use Of will always support the hard working efforts of software developers everywhere.

I disagree that this will encourage pirating.

If people didn’t pirate before, they aren’t going to start just because they can find serials without risk of crapware now.
If people did pirate before then they already know where to find serials and this will just be a convinience.

To reply to your other point. If we take the example of office software. If someone pirates MS Office and someone else Open Office instead, neither of them are paying Microsoft.
Of course there are moral and legal issues, but my point is that pirated or freeware, they both have the same result for the software author.

Bull shit. You just encouraged it by making a post about it. Would you write “Hey, I’m not into robbing people at gun point personally… but here’s some links on how to do it”? No, of course you wouldn’t.

This is wrong. This post is an insult to all the hard working software developers whose work you have featured before. I think you made a mistake by going this direction.
