MailHide ReCaptcha : Hide Your Email Address behind the CAPTCHA

Added: 17 Apr, 2008 (1,633 Views)

Mailhide provides a fool-proof way to hide email addresses from spammers that use automated spam bots to gather exposed email addresses. MailHide ReCaptcha hides your email behind the captcha that can be only solved by humans. The email address is revealed only when the captcha is solved.

How does it work? It takes about 30 seconds to set it up. First, enter your email address in to the provided field and click “protect it”. Next copy and paste the generated code to the place where you want to have the email link. Done, ReCaptcha will do the rest.

If you have a Wordpress-powered blog then you can also make use of its Wordpress plugin for blocking automated spam comments.

Better than nothing, but spam robots have proven to be able to solve captchas, depending on their level of difficulty, naturally. Problem is, if they get too tough, humans themselves may be in trouble :)

Why not just stick on a Disposable Email Address ?

The only problem with the mail form, although it doesn’t expose your actual email address, is that a spam bot can still submit its spam message into your form easily.

The spam is actually more likely to reach your inbox this way because form submissions will come from a certain address when sent to you (like mailer@example.com) which will seem less like spam to your filter. Also, since the subject line of the email won’t be touched by the spam bot, it will look more legit and you’ll be more likely to open it.

The form submission is not a good way to prevent spam, although it can be useful if you don’t want individuals (spammers and nonspammers alike) to know your address simply for privacy concerns, because email addresses can be used to identify you personally.
