Goformat: Quick Online Text Formatting Tool

Microsoft Word and Open Office both lack one key ability, one you probably won’t notice until you stumble upon a situation when you need it. That ability is changing entire sentences or paragraphs typed in capital letters to lower case en masse.

(update: apparently Microsoft Office has an option to change the entire document in capital letters to lower case. It even does one better and changes it to sentence case. You just have to select text you want to change and then press Shift+F3)

Goformat.com, on the other hand, does have this online text formatting ability. This site isn’t an online word processor, nor does it aim to be. Instead, Goformat.com offers a number of ways to quickly format a block of text. Whether you want to transform all letters to upper or lower case, remove all instances of annoying characters such as “>” (which tends to show up in forwarded emails), or simply add a capital letter to the beginning of every sentence, Goformat.com can do the job quickly and easily.

Like the idea, but concerned about using a web app to edit text you want to keep secure? Don’t be. The site is built entirely using Javascript, and sends no data to any server anywhere.

While the text editing tools described above are what opens when you go to GoFormat.com, some other tools can be found by clicking the “Tools” link at the top of the page. These include a random password generator, a URL formatting tool, a tool that can reverse backwards text and a nifty timezone map.

“Microsoft Word and Open Office both lack one key ability, …. That ability is changing entire sentences or paragraphs typed in capital letters to lower case en masse.”

I’m sorry to say that’s not true. Microsoft Word is perfectly able to do that.

Indeed, what Calvin says is true but I’d like to add that even OpenOffice has this feature, so the first two sentences of this article are completely false. ;-)

Just select some text in Microsoft Word, then press Shift+F3.

It’ll toggle between three possibilities for text capitalization, with the first capitalizing the first letter of every word (Something Like This).

The second will uppercase every character (LIKE THIS) and the third option will lowercase every character (like this).

As for OpenOffice, select the text, then go to Format -> Letter/Character and then choose between Lower- or Uppercase! :-)

Yes, so true. I was about to mention it, too. :D
