File-Encryptor: Securely Encrypt Important Files Online

Online encryption tool where you can freely encrypt and decrypt sensitive files. There are dozens of ways it can benefit you: send sensitive files via unsecure mediums (e.g. email, instant messaging clients etc.), protect and hide private information (such as passwords, credit card numbers, or bank statements), and whatever other reasons you can think of.

How does it works?

Encrypting:

  • Upload file, add password (optional) and click “Encrypt”.
  • Download encrypted file.

Decrypting (only files that were encrypted by File-Encryptor):

  • Upload file, enter password if required and click “Decrypt”.
  • Download decrypted file.

  • Encrypt files to very high standard. File-encryptor claims that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to decrypt encrypted files using other means. Its encryption code has been undefeated for about 20 years.
  • Password-protect files (optional).

If you have to upload the unencrypted file, that pretty much defeats the purpose of encrypting it. For real security you need to encrypt it locally so it never leaves your machine in an unencrypted state.
Truecrypt is a free, open-source, cross-platform encryption utility that can do all that and it has a lot of other useful features. http://www.truecrypt.org

The other serious problem with this is the files can only be decrypted using their website. So if anything ever happens to them, you are totally screwed. If you handle the encryption locally, you can be in control of the application that can decrypt your files so you can always get your data back.

Totally agree. Because the service is web based you can’t really rely on it. But if you are somewhere far from your PC or just want to send someone sensitive files than it may come in very useful.
