The problem with music on YouTube is that half of the songs are either of a low quality, an unoriginal cover version or are live in convert. Most people aren’t looking for these type of videos. Google Music Search is a service launched by Google recently and currently available only in the US. It is something which is integrated with the main Google search and helps users discover music in a better way.

Internet radio has become a popular entertainment source especially for music and podcast-like talk shows. I have found a great application that allows you to listen to Internet radio on the move without shelling out for an expensive smart phone.

VirtualRadio is an application for Java enabled cell phones which allows the user to listen to Internet radio stations on their cell phone. The app uses the GPRS internet connection available on almost all cell phones to download the audio at a rate of 32kb/s. The audio quality is very high and music is crisp and uninterrupted.

There are loads of different channels to choose from and categories (called groups) to browse through channels which interest you such as ‘Music’ and ‘Politics’.

The app is completely free to download and use, although GPRS costs apply and vary depending on your network.

TourMapr is a Google Maps mashup which music lovers will find very useful. In fact if you follow a band or an artist religiously, this is a must-bookmark site for you. It can show any artist or band tour plans and dates for the next few months plotted on a map.

On the left it asks you to enter the artist name. Once you hit enter, it shows four expandable tabs – Artist Info, Similar Artist, Tour Info and Links. Artist info gives you general information about the artist. Similar artist gives you links to tour plans of similar artists. Tour Info is the main tab where you find the tour plan which is plotted on the right. Click on a date and you get the tour details popped up on the map.

iNudge is a free and fun music synthesizer that lets you create your own sound patterns by selecting steps on a 16×16 matrix. It seems rather dumb at first, but once you start creating more advanced sound patterns it gets very addictive.

Start by selecting little squares on the matrix with your mouse. You can adjust volume and speed (tempo) of the tune or clear the pattern with “CLR” button at the bottom. If you want to save and play the tune later, simply copy-paste the pattern from the matrix.

Below is the sound pattern for the theme from the movie “Beverly Hills Cop”.

PWNlast.fm is a new online application that adds torrents to Last.FM, enabling anyone to easily download Last.FM music tracks and albums as they navigate the website.

There are two ways it can be used:

(1) By typing pwn in front of any Last.Fm URL (see image below). This will bring up the actual torrent site from where the relevant torrent files can be downloaded.

(2) By installing an add-on which works with Firefox (as a Greasemonkey script) and Opera browser. When installed it automatically integrates a list of related torrents to any Last.FM page, showing full titles, file sizes and the number of active seeds and peers for the MP3 file or an album. See image below:

In addition, every torrent includes a play icon with full preview of the track.

To check for the latest albums from a single artist/band, simply enter the name of the artist and hit “Check”

To check your entire music library, simply upload a .xml file with your music library (usually can be export from you music player). Then Album Spotter will analyze the library and tell you if you have latest albums from the artists in your library. The latest albums are highlighted in green or grey. Green means you already have the latest albums and grey means you don’t.
