Subpug: A New & Cool RSS Reader

Google Reader is receiving a lot of flak for some of the changes they have made as of late. This opens the door for a new competitor to step in and try to dethrone the almighty Google. Subpug is hoping to be your replacement. They offer a great feature set, and they are incredibly easy to use.

They especially cater to new RSS users, who aren’t following thousands of feeds already. They offer a bunch of pre-subscribed categories that make it easy to find what you are in to, and subscribe to some popular sites in that category. Best of all, you don’t need to sign up for any kind of account to start using their service. You simply go to their website, and start reading.

You can also import an OPML file to add all the feeds you read on another reader. The layout is very clean is visually pleasing. If you are sick of your current reader, Subpug is a great option that is worth checking out. If you are new to readers, their categories make it easy to get started.

WebTalks is an app for Android devices which reads your RSS feeds to you thereby helping you consume content when you are driving, working out etc. It connects itself to your Google Reader account and reads your feeds one by one. It also has an offline mode so that it can read even when your phone isn’t connected to the Internet. You could also add individual site URLs and it’ll fetch the content and convert it into audio.

A good thing about this app is that it synchronizes the reading with Google Reader, meaning it automatically marks those articles as read after it has played them. This might well be the go-to app for people who usually have a lot of unread items in their Google Reader and do not get the time to attend to them.

If you have subscribed to the RSS feed of a site that rarely posts updates, then checking your RSS reader daily for updates might not be a good idea. What would help is a way for you to get notified via email whenever there was a new entry in that particular RSS feed. Here to accomplish that is a web service called feed2mail.

feed2mail is a free to use web service that helps you get notified of new entries in your RSS feeds. Like in the case mentioned above or in case you are not fond of RSS readers, you can use this site to send you email notifications any time there is a new entry in your favorite RSS feeds. The site does not require any signups. All you have to do is visit the site, enter the feed’s URL, enter your email address, then click on the confirmation link that is emailed to you. TumblRSS Beta: Import RSS Feeds to Tumblr Automatically

TwitterToRSS: Read Twitter Streams Via RSS Feed

Viewing your Twitter stream is a lot like reading an RSS feed. There are multiple entries that you have to read one after the other. Merging your Twitter stream with your RSS reader would save you the time otherwise spent opening up a new browser tab particularly for Twitter. Here to help you make that merger is a web service called Twitter to RSS.

Twitter to RSS is a free to use web tool that lets you convert your Twitter stream to an RSS feed. All you have to do is type in your Twitter username and click on the green Send button. A preview of your tweets will be shown and you will be asked to choose your RSS reader. Choosing the RSS reader will open its respective “Add feed” page in a new browser tab, making feed addition more convenient. If your reader is not listed on the site you can choose the “Custom” option to be taken to your RSS feed URL. Simply copy the URL and paste it in your reader.

RSS feeds let you stay in touch with the latest updates on your favorite websites. But not all RSS readers let you conveniently do this. Q-Sensei FeedBooster is a web service completely free to use. The site acts as a reader for your RSS feeds. Entries from your feeds are then organized into blocks that appear on your dashboard and these blocks take you to the original webpage of a feed entry. Mmmmail: Disposable Email To RSS Service

You probably know about the disposable email services that help you create temporary email accounts to send and receive emails (like website sign up confirmations) that you don’t want to reach your main inbox. Mmmmail is one such service, albeit, with a twist. It transfers such emails to RSS and you can check them in your RSS feed reader.

You create an email account by typing in a name in the box on their homepage, and it’ll generate a mmmmail.com/name.xml page that you can subscribe to in your RSS reader to check emails.

Your mailbox is public and anyone can subscribe to it. Also, emails older than 3 days get deleted automatically. Overall, a simple disposable email service that makes use of the RSS functionality.
