Sadly this site is offline as they’ve been hacked (“again” in their own words, which doesn’t bode well).

Hey Paul, thanks for the notice. I really appreciate your comments ;-)

As about Boxstr, well … I am very disappointed about them. Now they are asking users to re-upload their files … that sucks. Seemed like a nice service to me. )-:

    Hey Guys,

Rory from BOXSTr here. Just wanted to clear thigns up – no you do not have to reupload your files. We still have your files on the server, you can easily request a zip to download them if you want and that will come in handy over the next few days when it comes moving files to our new system.

Here’s what happened: there was a major security breach in our former scripting. We have yet to discover what caused it and had no choice but to release our new version earlier than we wanted. We tried to keep our older version up but after a day of being active it would mysteriously go down and everything would be deleted. So we would waste tons of money and hours staying up for two days straight to restore our backups (yes, we really do backup your files).

Finally we had to make the decision, let the site fail due to hackers, or release our new version early. So we had to. Only thing missing from it was an easy upgrade from how files were stored on the old version to how they are on the new one. So that is what we are working on right now. We’re here for the long haul, just wanted to put you guys at ease and clear up the reuploading it.

Take care and if you have any questions, we’ll be here.

    -Rory

Rory, as you are an employee at BoxStr what is currently occuring at BoxStr please, we have not been able to access your website for a number of days and the files stored with you are not being delivered to the music players on our website etc and the web appears to offer no explanation. I am aware that many others are trying to find out if BoxSTR has gone bust or has tech problems, a little courtesy please, should we wait for a return or has BoxStr gone forever!!!

I registered yesterday, October 29th, and either they reduced their storage space last week or it varies by location. I am in Argentina and I got a 5 Gb account.
I do not have an opinion about the service, yet, I am still trying it and comparing it to similar services.

i use boxstr for my blog images and music. why is it down again? this is sad. :( thinking of changing host now.

    • http://www.makeuseof.com Aibek

Yup, it seems to be down, AGAIN! :-(

  • http://boxstr.com Rory

The time it was down was because we were doing extensive back work on the site (actually installing a brand new BEASTLY server) so basically the site would go down everytime we had to either shut off the server or unplug a cable over a couple days.

Don’t expect to see the site have any downtime soon!

    • Madure

All my files loaded a few months ago are missing. Could you please let me know how to recover and download all as a zip file.

      • Mr. Greg

You can’t get them back. They’re gone–at least, that’s what the message was to me when I logged in to find out what happened to mine. BOXSTR SUCKS.

    • Mr. Greg

yeah, you guys deleted my files because i wasn’t online for 30 days. man, just like google. no, wait. google would *never* do something so inane/anti-customer. ugh.

People, use Picasa–you can create as many google accounts as you want if you run out of space. Boxstr sucks.

  • http://www.1stopupload.com/ Alex

Well if you need a host no one gets it done better than 1Stopupload.com 10GB space and 50GB of bandwidth a month! Where can you beat that? Plus 3 ways to upload, Flash, URL, and by Browser.

    P.S. Uptime is 99.9%

  • Mr. Greg

I can only add that these guys are really not customer-oriented. i went to my myspace page, and found that my background pic had been removed. No warning. No explanation. So, I logged in to my account and found that they’d deleted the file. In fact, they deleted *all* of my files, and their message was not pleasnt–it was even aggressive, stating, in effect: “You haven’t been active online within 30 days, so we’ve deleted all of your files, and don’t ask us to put them back up because they’ve been completely wiped from our servers.” Seriously, it was like that. Unbelievably inane. I know a good fix for this, but I’m not going to reveal it here. I don’t think anti-customer online “companies” like that should succeed, personally.

This is the second time Boxstr has lost my files. They even lost my password this time. They gave me a new password and I’m sure they’ll let me up load new files so they can steal them again. Anybody know how to get in touch with Boxstr, I,ve only gotten noreply correspondence from them.

  • kaly

TNX for pointing it out, I will also try to get in touch with them.

  • Pissed off TX boy

I was a new user to Boxstr (account 1 week old), uploaded 5 songs, returned May 21 2009 to find all songs erased. And underneath storage details it said I had used 3.3 MB – huh??? The files were erased, every folder had 0 files. So I assumed if I logged in back the next day, maybe it was a glitch that would be fixed…. nope.

So I uploaded 1 song this time, and it increased my storage limit from 3.3 MB to 7.5 MB?? WTF? Boxstr sucks – I know they will lose our files again. I am not impressed.

People. Boxstr.com is dead. I mean it’s not. It’s redirects you to opendrive. But I tried boxstr.NET and I found all of my files there. I told opendrive about it. They told me to download them from there and upload to opendrive. So if you are looking for your files go to boxstr.net it’s there.

  • Kozo

These guys are criminals plain and simple! They wouldn’t even respond to me when I found out they were overcharging my account! Then they just take our files and delete them without warning and then tell us we have to create a whole new account with a whole new company even though we’ve already paid in advance with theirs?! Then they won’t even give us a refund! Then they have the nerve to ask us for our account information from Boxstr!? Wait a second – I thought they were supposed to be the same guys who ran Boxstr in the first place. Something smells VERY FISHY here! I hope these guys get what’s coming to them – PRISON TERMS for FRAUD!

BoxStr.com(now opendrive) has lost it’s entire filesystem, not once, or even twice, but three times in two years.
Do not, under any circumstance rely on them for backups.
If you don’t mind an unstable streaming host, they could have a use.

If you just lost your files, go to boxstr.net, they’ll be there. Who knows if .net will be more reliable than .com
I wouldn’t be surprised if this whole “ZOMG! Boxstr.net illegally copied meh files t_t” claim of OpenDrive’s owner, is just a crap story, and he really owns both services.
    *shrugs*
I’d avoid both, but that’s me.

I’ll suggest several hosts here, that are reliable.

ADrive.com gives you 50gb of storage, and a 1gb filesize limit. If there’s an inactivity limit, it’s more than 90 days.

ESnips gives you 5gb of stoarge, and there is no expiration date on your account. I didn’t log in for over a year and all of my files are still there.

DivShare gives you 5gb and says your account lasts forever, but I can’t say how long the account really lasts, as I haven’t tested it beyond about 45 days without logging in.

MyOtherDrive is smaller 2gb, it also lasts forever(really) as I went just short of TWO YEARS without logging in and everything was still there :)

Both of the below offer 10gbs, but make no mention of how often you need to log in to keep the account. I just found both of them today, so I can’t comment. Use your own judgement :)
