ANBARASAN asks:
Recently I installed a new LG DVD writer and rebooted my system which runs on Windows XP. The BIOS recognised the new DVD drive. After booting in Windows XP, I could not find the drive icon in My Computer. I think that Windows XP cannot recognise the new drive.
How do I make Windows XP recognise the new DVD drive without reinstalling the OS?

July 15, 2012Check Device Manager to see if the drive is listed in your detected hardware list. If the drive is not there at all, open Control Panel -> Add Hardware and run a scan for new hardware. If the new drive replaced another drive, you may need to forcibly uninstall the old driver and reboot the system to get it to recognize the new one.

July 15, 2012Check in the Disk Manager to make sure the new DVD has been assigned a drive letter, if not assign a letter to it.
You can open the disk manager by right clicking on Computer and selecting Manager. From there you will see it listed in the left hand pane.

July 15, 2012Optical drives are usually recognized by XP “out of the box” (except for a few ancient models), so double check the contacts and, as Bruce and others suggest, check the device manager.
The DVD writing capability though, is another thing, as XP does not include that as part of the system, so you’ll need to add a CD/DVD writing application. One excellent option is CD Burther XP from http://cdburnerxp.se.

July 16, 2012Not all the DVD Writer needs to install the newest driver, because sometimes it can has problem related to the OS and the functionality of the DVD writer. But, before taking further action, you need to check the device manager as other suggested. Make sure your DVD writer is on the list of the device. If it is on the list, try to use that DVD Drive by insert DVD disc into it, see whether it can read and display the content of your disc or it is not responding at all. If it gives a respond and display the content, i think it is not a big problem for you about the icon, since it will automatically display when it reads the disc. But if it doesn’t give any responds, just rollback the driver to the previous version.

July 16, 2012use ‘Add new Hardware’ from Control panel where it will detect it automatically. Also check the hardware from BIOS.

July 18, 2012Hi Anbarasan !!
Download the zip package from this link and run it. Hope this works for you.
In case, if it does not work then please use the Fix-it provided in the Microsoft link to fix the issue:-

Do not follow the registry method without taking a registry backup.

July 18, 2012Just a thought, but if this is an older ATA drive, did you check the master/slave jumper to ensure that it is set correctly? I have had this cause a similar problem before. If it is the only drive on the ribbon cable, it should be master; if there is another drive on the same cable, check the other drive’s setting and set this one accordingly. I have also seen computers that refuse to acknowledge a drive using either setting; they want the drive to be setup as a cable-select. Just throwing that out there. If it is a newer SATA drive, well, this comment is irrelevant.

July 26, 2012Dvd writers are plug and play, no need to do anything else other than connecting wires properly. I can even say that you old dvd writer is also working

August 27, 2012Hello, first of all I would start by checking the connections. Make sure they are connected properly. Once that is done, start your computer and check in disk management and also in device manager. You might have to assign a letter to it, even though it is should be recognized as soon as you connect it and your computer is turn on.
