Why does Windows not recognize my Sonic NW S202F mp3 player?

My computer will not recognize my player. I want to remove music from it in order to install something else. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell machine.

Hello, has the computer recognized player before?  Did you make sure to install drivers and software provided for player?  If software is installed and player is not recognized, you might try uninstalling software and restart your system.  Try reinstalling software and connect player to see if it is recognized.  It is very important for you to try connecting player to a different USB port in the back of the tower.  Do not use the front headers or a USB hub.  Have you checked software CD to see if there is a driver for your player?  If there is, you could try finding the driver with .inf extension and install it manually.  Try running driver installation as an administrator.

Have you checked if player shows in device manager and disk management?  Check device manager for any unknown devices.  Also check in disk management.

Have you checked if player is recognized in a different computer?

This is the manual for your player:
http://portablemedia.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/sony/nw-s202.html?idRes=588901

You have the possibility of resetting the player to factory settings.  According to manual, this will not delete any music installed.  Read page 49, of above link.  Also try playing with the USB settings as specified in page 52.  For troubleshooting USB/not recognize problems, check page 73.

Thanks all of you for your interest and help.  I am afraid I have had no luck.  It did originally work on my computer.  It doesn’t work on my daughter’s computer now, either.  I have uninstalled the Sonic driver and re-installed it but that hasn’t worked.  It said I already had the proper driver installed.  Also tried re-assigning a drive letter but didn’t manage this.

Thank you all so much for your help.  I have tried all the suggestions but nothing has worked, so I am afraid I am going to have to accept the fact that my MP3 player no longer functions properly and buy a new one.
