Is there a way to enable backups to an external hard drive on Windows 7 Home Premium?

I'd like to thank Fidelis(Synctoy) and pceasies(DriveImage XML) for their help.

You should be able to do this with Windows Backup.  I use Ultimate, so I don't have first-hand experience with the Home editions, but the only thing you may not be able to do is back up to network storage.

If you want to do disk images (this is a single file that contains all information on your hard drive and is essentially a virtual copy) you should look into DriveImage XML

Hello, there are many options to do this by using third party utilities such as the following:
    http://www.comodo.com/home/data-storage-encryption/comodo-backup.php

Or you could download and use Synctoy:
    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=15155

With SyncToy it would go like this:
    -- Download and  install SyncToy

-- Backup to an available drive/location

-- Set up SyncToy to keep the files in sync

-- use the task scheduler to make SyncToy run automatically

The advantage of using SyncToy is that you have instant access to all your files without having to restore an entire backup.

Another option you have is by using the Robocopy command.  Of course you would have to have a backup already made....
